Tone2 Bifilter has alot of different filters such as comb, fm etc. and its free.
Also its cool to load a .wav into Shortcircuit Free and use its interesting filters to mangle sounds...

you could also use the awesome freeware DAW/sound editor audacity to mangle sounds. i have used it to manually draw ticks and pops out of my vinyl as i wasn't hip to the massive freeware scene last year and couldn't find any working freeware noise reduction units.
you could use many of the tools in audacity in non-standard ways for mangling purposes. you could manually re-edit WAVs for stuttering type effects. it has a musically scaled pitch transposer. i was actually toying with the idea of using audacity as a SAMPLER cut and paste style as my old PC wouldn't run any software samplers. it would be a time consuming way to do it, but it would work.
you could hand draw volume levels to simulate VCA effects in audacity.
it has a really useful EQ that i used to create static stepped filter sweep effects.
there's always neat little effects hiding in your gear waiting for you to find them. i found a great overload effect in my crappy 4 track cassette when i sent my drum machine into the mic inputs and pushed it into clipping turning acoustic drum sounds into purely synthetic tones.
but nowadays it's alot easier with so many great off the shelf mangling programs out there. to this day, i'm still not sure if i've ever heard the granular effect yet. everytime i hear "granular", i think "the matrix".
one time i created a fake "talk box" by taping a plastic tube over a small speaker i had. it was fugly, but it gave me that talking guitar type sound. you could easily add that effect to your arsenal for next to nothing provided you already have AD/DA converters and a mic.
