Hi all,

i am currently looking into sample manipulation fx of the crazy and free-to-cheap kind, but didn't found too much. Really happy here with Glitch, which is amazing, but apart from this...any other ideas/faves ?

Thank you, Richard

hmm... If you buy electronic instruments stand alone version from Native Instruments you get the FastFX, which is very useful for this.

while so far all that's been discussed is "glitch" type devices, there are plenty of other ways to mess up audio for sound design.

some STANDARD effects you should have in your arsenal include: bitcrushing, vocoders, ring modulators, flangers, filters, pitch transposers and distortion (incl. fuzz & amp sims). all of these effects are great for trashing sounds. then you could even chain effects so that by the end, the original source is unrecognizeable. simple preamp overload clipping can turn acoustic drums into electronic sounding ones and a flanger can turn almost anything into metallic sounding for example.

a few interesting other effects i've found are:
grumblebum and yoink by tweakbench. i'm guessing that yoink is alot like scrubby by a different company

rezsynth is a really cool comb filter synth that's playable on keyboard. the demo i heard for it turned a drum beat in to an oddly beatiful synth riff. it's a specialized filter effect

a really handy piece of freeware would be SIR & convo boy (or something to that effect), which are convolution reverbs, but there are other impulses available for mangling too.

sxratch sounds interesting in theory, but i heard no demo for it.

there are tons of portals including right here inside KVR that list freeware by type. there's a huge thread right in here about freeware effects. you should really read that for more info. one other thing to do is visit the websites for effects and listen to the demos. there are alot of unique effects out there for sure.

yeah don't really need a single plug to do it all, just use the basics creatively by stringing them all together and using some extreme settings. Use eq, distortion, sample rate reduction, flangers, delay, reverb - all sorts which you can pick up for free. You can create totally unique sounds which noone else will have

in checking out convolution IR demos, there are some pretty unique mangling sounds available. ALOT of the sounds were the same blurred sound (even the room and hall sounds) but there were a few examples that i heard that made a nice metallic flanging type sound but without the annoying in and out peaking that makes analogue flangers hard to use. it's hard to get the effect on exactly the sound you want it on as analogue units are cyclic.

a really cool filter effect demo i just heard is quadfrohmage by ohmforce. it's a filter effect, but it can do all sorts of crazy distortions i wouldn't have thought a filter could do. definately check the demos out.

Hi Richard!
try dover's plug's and Martin Brinkman's as well as Jack Dark's work and ugo's incredible Metallurgy...(be prepared for ugo's new ironhead morphing drumsynth 8) ...it comes with a spectacular morph effect...tunguska!....soooooon.... )
if you like dblue's Glitch, you'll surely like LiveSlice and Lucifer2...neither are free, but they're well worth the money :hihi:
i know that odo is working on some really cool stuff...I kNOW I'm leaving out some really good stuff...surely runagate, bobsled or dubbyah will be able to fill in the blanks I'm leaving...
ahh, yes... runagate has a couple of peculiar new ones...very nice and quite unique!
this'd be a good start (as well as the other's previously mentioned, of course!) to your sample manglement toolbox!

...are often included in one's host. As mentioned in previous posts "eq, distortion, sample rate reduction, flangers, delay, reverb" combined with whatever sort of flexible routing your host allows can lead to very unusual results which can easily be saved as patches/scenes/tracks/whatever.

Check out what your host can do for you...

Doppelmangler

You could take a look at CamelSpace - its not free I'm afraid, but it is good for mangling stuff. Theres a link in my sig.

Thanks
