Thanks for the reply stag. Just one thing though...

I really don't agree with you there. There are reportedly more than 1,000,000 Cubase users worldwide, and quite obviously the vast majority of them do not frequent internet forums. Only the few who follow the forums will have any idea about DX support being gone.

Having said that, I no longer use Cubase anyway, so it doesn't bother me personally wtf they do. I just think its a pity to see their customers get what - for some of them - will be a bit of a raw deal here. As others have said, C4 was looking quite hot at one point...

Cakewalk has already stated that they have no intention of ever dropping DX support simply because it would screw with older projects. Older project compatability is something they take seriously.

On the personal level, I can't see why anyone would give up DX support. There are still plenty of plugs out there in DX form that I own. Yes, most of them are older, but that doesn't make them obsolete. Waves plugs, just to name one company, have always worked better in DX form. Until ver.5, they also sounded better and worked better with automation.

I like the fact that I have a choice sometimes between the DX/VST or DXi/VSTi. Numerous times I've had a plug fail or crash my host only to load the counterpart and have it function. There seems to be a bit of hoodoo voodoo when it comes to vst because of flaws in the spec for vst. I've encountered far more bugs when working with vst than I ever have with DX.

I say all this as a former Cubase user. Then again, Sonar passed Cubase in sales a few years ago, so I guess they have more money to troubleshoot. I don't consider DX bloat, I consider it a standard. Besides, Steinberg seems to be pulling some sneaky stuff with VST3, and I wouldn't put it past them to try and screw everyone over if was to their benefit once most of the hosts have dropped DX.

I wish my car ran on two kinds of fuel.

And besides, it makes more sense to not support DX since it's not a cross-platform format.

Looking on Cubasenet the main gripe with users are that this is unreliable plus they will not be able to open SX projects

REAPER, for one, will not be dropping DX support any time soon =)

Do you ever read your post before submiting.
Chris doesn't know shit, so what? it ain't a support forum... support is at Steinberg.net.
Cubase doesn't support RTAS, AU and MAS, DXi has never supported too.
So DX in cubase was rather tolerated instead of supported.
Before releasing it, which BTW, is October 9th, they allowed people to download manuals et al.
I posted my order today :P fully aware the DX support isn't there... Charlie Steinberg didn't came to my place and force feed it on me.
Even if i change my mind i can send it back, sell, transfer the license... which i can't do with a lot of other hosts i own.
dont forget you can use a wrapper ;)

also dont forget that removing internal legacy directx wrapper stuff may actually be a good thing for a program as feature packed as cubase. i would think that code that is easier to maintain would also be more frequently maintained and updated and so on..

how would you like to be a steinberg programmer? yeesh... try going to work every day with almost 2 decades of legacy features to manage :)

But wasn't the whole point of the SX rebranding exercise an effort to change that? IIRC they wiped the slate clean in terms of legacy code.

Also if they wanted to ditch alternative formats and exclusively support their own VST format that would have been good timing, as it was a new "Version 1" situation, and everyone was looking to see what it did and din't do/support. This time around they may have inexplicably dropped the "SX" tag, but it is still "Version 4" and a clear upgrade to the same core program.

Surely for *anyone* doing this stuff - making music using computer-based setups - compatibility is a key issue. It's a Big Issue - which program works with what plugins! Moving the goal posts without making it absolutely clear to users is in my opinion entirely indefensible, if not simply unforgiveable.

Who has upgraded still have SX3 to finish his work, the newcomers do not have compatibility issues on their own setups.
Even so i'd like Steinberg to reinstate DX... or give a preference option to the people who need it, just for now... on other releases bubye, DXi was developed by cakewalk, as now Steinberg made rising a lot confusions with the outcome of VST3, they migth feel the same if DXi specs are reformed and become hostages of Cakewalk.

It seems a few people round here lately have so much time on their hands & nothing better to do than to bag software they don't even use on just about every forum & thread they visit?

Whats up with that?

Does Cubase bashing = Latent/closet Cubase tendencies?

Sonar users already won this war.

It has been said recently that the loudest ones are non-steinberg users.

I've been a hardcore steinberg user for a while, and I'm leaving. Also going are the many books and extra documentation I've been buying to get even deeper into every feature of said program.

Is it because I have a gazillion DX plugs and FX that have now left me dead in the water? Not really. technology always dies so quickly it can make your head spin. As I type this, I'm already lamenting my PCI Uad cards cause PCIe is the new thing in my future motherboards.

I am leaving because customer support is close to EVERYTHING *to me*. Seeing as all the major DAWS have the same 'general' features, cust support is what can really make the difference. (don't tear me aprt for that last folks, every DAW has their own little perks they do better or exclusively, I'm talking about recording, editing, etc. Typical stuff.)

Have any of you UAD customers called Universal's tech support? AMAZING. They called me back, and even checked out my website. Some will even talk about non-related gear if not busy. So I'll stick with them.

Cubase dropping VST? No big deal. Technology dies. Cubase not warning those who've paid in hard earned cash to make them who they are? Not acceptable. Not something I want to be hit with in the future. Next time it could be something that DOES piss me off DIRECTLY.

I'm loud, and I'm a Cubase user, but once all my projects are transferred over. I'm jumping ship.

BTW, anyone have any suggestions for a new host? :troll:

JUST kidding. Don't feel like opening *that* can of worms. Yet.

Well of course he didn't. He and Mannie Rurup run DigitalMusician.net these days. Steinberg Media Technologies is controlled by Kazunori Kobayashi, with Mitsuru Umemura and Takuya Nakata as his henchmen. They delegate the day to day operation in Hamburg which is controlled by Andreas Stelling. When it come to the business, the product and the ass kicking, Charlie has left the building. One of those little Steinberg oversights not to mention it very loudly.

Still, DigitalMusician looks real cool. It lets musicians jam in real time over then net. Works with any VST compliant host. VST 2.0, that is.

I think it has more to do with standing up for the right thing. There's prolly too many Americans on the forum for anybody to really get that thang tho.

I understand the political point you make (and partly agree) but in this context it is an unfair comment. The company that has behaved badly in yours and my opinion is German/Japanese... while their American rival Cakewalk have consistently shown what doing the right thing by their customers actually looks like, and set an example that many of the others would do well to follow.
