Reaper vs Tracktion

Many cool insights already.
Seems we should carefully watch development of Reaper, as it develops fast. On the other hands, Tracktion (in its simplicity and love from users base, as myself) needs to have good direct competitors, minor and senior, to continue to grow.
I like it as they added support for Tranzport some 3 months after we required it here (this box is useful, even if you have Mackie Control or more grown up controller).
I think that guys who have time and energy should experiment a bit with Reaper to report about strong points that could be useful in Tracktion.
Also, now when more-less established, Tracktion should faster develop and improve its functions that are often reported as apparent weakness or bugs.
Anyway, congrats to Reaper developer, as new SW brought to table something fresh, similar to what we felt when Tracktion appeared in the past.
Don't forget that your music might eventually outlive you.

The only thing I miss is the racks!! And maybe the mackie effects too. Justin seems to address issues with reaper. Hell its been almost a year since the last version of tracktion came out.
The racks!! Are they the same as Live 6?
Not really. Trackion invented racks but in Tracktion they are more a semi modular routing environment within the sequencer, they have some of Lives features but not the macros etc.

(in fact Tracktion invented a lot of things we take for granted today in hosts - single screen, freezing, inline midi editing are just 3 - if pace of development had continued as it used to be, and as it is in Reaper, it would still be far ahead of the field)

Yes, I think it is easy to forget that Tracktion was revolutionary. It was the first with freeze and other things as mentioned above. It did things that no other sequencer dared do. And it still does. Not many hosts can actually say they are revolutionary in such an extreme way.

Development has slowed down, but I don't see it as an all bad thing. More updates doesn't equal a better or worse program. It's just a way of working for each developer. Jules was extremely fast at fixing things back when Tracktion was trying to stake it's claim in the host market.

Now we see hosts such as Reaper and EXT, both of which are great hosts, and their rate of development, and we get a little homesick. We had come to expect for so long all the updates and the feverishly fast development. So when it slows down to a normal pace, some people view it as a bad thing. The fact is, that if development hadn't started on fire like it did, most people probably wouldn't even complain when updates come as often as they do now.

On the other hand, we have Reaper, which is at that point of staking it's claim in the sequencer market. The updates are coming, and they come fast. So in some people's eyes, that makes it superior to others. And for them, it may be.

I mention these mainly because that seems to be something that many use for comparison. Not everyone, of course. But many. Does it really mean anything? Nope, of course not. Does it make one better then the other? No.

It just gives us options. If every host had the same features, why have several hosts? We'd only have one, or the cheapest one wins. Instead, we get several incredible apps, with incredible possibilities, that we never had before.

I think it's a very good day.

Very well put.

Tracktion was the first budget sequencer to have freeze. A couple of the big boys had it before T did.

Like who? Tracktion had it before Logic, Cubendo, Sonar, etc.

To resurrect this thread, how do you all feel about this comparison today in 2016 with Tracktion 7 just arriving on the scene?

Post

I don't know much about Reaper but I'd like to hear what users have found to be its most useful features.

It would be a big help for commenters to include which versions of Tracktion and Reaper you are comparing.

Pretty much useless without it. And referring to T2 and T3 is ancient history (and a different company.) Glad to hear you are still able to use it 8 or ten years later though.

I would also suggest comparing only the current versions of Reaper and Tracktion because that's what the reality IS, not what it was. Or at least the latest Reaper and T6 because no one has had a chance to work extensively with T7 yet.
