I've never intentionally listened to prog rock before, so I have absolutely no clue what to do with this one at this point. Guess I gotta go find some and start listening.

I've never understood what prog-rock is, or is meant to sound like
I know the bands that are considered prog, but they all sound different to me.
Genesis, Yes, Floyd...Zep? are they a prog band?
It's not like punk - you know when your listening to a punk song.
It does seem prog is more defined by 'length' than anything else.

Mellotrons as well...
I might go for a Gentle Giant style instrumental [in amongst writing 3 different VST.. thank goodness I don't have a job at the mo! Now, how am I going to feed the kids?]
btw Parliament are funk, but sufficiently way out to have elements of prog.
We could get into a real argument about what consitutes prog here. In the US, in many minds it pretty much appears to boil down to being Styx and Kansas, and maybe a bit of The Flock, with all the European stuff being 'Ark Rock'
I take quite a wide view of prog, including the obvious (Yes, Genesis, King Crimson, ELP, PFM, etc), but also include further afield artists such as Gordon Giltrap, Penguin Cafe Orchestra, Joe Walsh, Family... Essentially prog isn't about 10 minute songs and noodly moog solos, tho' those are certainly there. It's about experimentation, about using music to suit what you want to say, about music for music's sake, about crossing boundaries and making new and often surprising juxtopositions. For me, prog is the most exciting form of music, what modernism was at the start of C20th...
I would strongly recommend folk find any Gentle Giant from 1975 or before [albums: Gentle Giant, Aquiring the Taste, Octopus, In a Glass House, The Power and the Glory, FreeHand, Interview] and listening through. On youtube there is some excellent footage of them in concert which I would suggest is a great place to get a taster
Family are an excellent place to find non-std prog [again youtube is your friend; search for Family +Chapman]. Very few of their songs went over the 5 minute mark in the studio.. Listen to the albums 'Family Entertainment', 'Fearless' and 'Bandstand' for some of their strongest moments.
I could go on all evening

I am really hoping Parliament is 70s and prog enough for me to take that kind of direction. I used to have a flatmate who liked prog rock and it filled my home with dank, lingering, moribund atmosphere that filled my heart with terror like vultures' talons scraping across the tile floor while I lay prone on the sofa, dying slowly from too much cask wine. Other than that it was alright.duncanparsons wrote: btw Parliament are funk, but sufficiently way out to have elements of prog.

Oh man, I suck at this!
I can only butcher the genre, right? I think it's pointless for me to enter this month heh.

Hmmmm... found more than one source that lists Kraftwerk as prog rock... maybe... maybe...

Why would butchering the genre be a reason not to enter?core wrote:I can only butcher the genre, right? I think it's pointless for me to enter this month heh.

So...
You can only enter once????
...because the obvious prog way around the time limit is to have a 12 minute "Suite" composed of 6 2 minute movements...
What about Rush? 2112 is certainly prog...

is it 70's or prog rock? I want to enter in the spirit of the comp.
The ohio players are 70's, but not prog.
perhaps some afternoon delight

TBH with the right (wrong) vocals on top of this, you would have a good Punk songcore wrote:Oh man, I suck at this!

Now change the type of drum sound to full reverb rock drums and trow a bit strings on top of that and you can call it prog rock :)

Thanks for the theme. I think I'll be able to put something together that falls in this category.
As the guitarit of the greatest prog rock band ever is now writing anything from electro hip-hop to symphonic music for Bruckheimer movies, I think the field of scope has been widened considderable.
