yes, these associations are an odd thing, aren't they? - once Deep Purple and Led Zeppelin have been considered ultra-hard and brutal...bduffy wrote:"Nicer"? How so? I would associate downsampling with "rougher".jens wrote:bduffy wrote:

me neither but rather sweet pop instead - but still I use both bit-crushing and downsampling a lot... it often makes things so much nicer.![]()

anyway: e.g. I sometimes take a heavy guitar-riff and totally 'destroy' it with filter, bitcrusher, downsampler, digtal-waveshaping, etc. until you hardly recognize it anymore and suddenly people who hate hard guitar say something like 'that's nice!'

Right. Doesn't sound like it'd be nice, but I'd have to hear it in context to get it, I think. Any of your songs have that in it?jens wrote:anyway: e.g. I sometimes take a heavy guitar-riff and totally 'destroy' it with filter, bitcrusher, downsampler, digtal-waveshaping, etc. until you hardly recognize it anymore and suddenly people who hate hard guitar say something like 'that's nice!'

Please do, I'm most curious.
I was just listening to Ulrich Schnuass's brilliant album "A Strangely Isolated Place", and I swear he uses a bitcrusher on every track, and it's annoying, because it's so smooth and ambient otherwise, I was like, "OK! I get it already! Turn it off for one song at least!". My strong sentiment about bitcrushers was reinforced by that, perhaps.

Are you sure they're not saying something like "that's noise!"jens wrote:suddenly people who hate hard guitar say something like 'that's nice!'

That's pretty common, and you're right, it is annoying. It's like those 80s albums where the guitar always had chorus on it. Too much of a good thing and all that.bduffy wrote:I swear he uses a bitcrusher on every track
Bitcrushers can be used quite creatively though, just that judicious use is always preferred. But then, some folk put ketchup on all of their food, too (god knows why).

well, of course I don't put 'nasty' effects on everything - it's has to be adequate and has to balance with the sweet sounds...
...I don't think there's something like a general recipe - that's imo counter-creative...
well, o.k. - this is a track I've been recently working on - but please keep in mind that it's rather unfinished - because my singeress doesn't come up with the vocals/lyrics!

Well, that is the nicest bitcrushed guitar I've ever heard!
And there's even a chorus on the guitar for shamann!
Cool track, very happy!

There are different sounding bitcrushers you know. And usually the thing that really makes a difference in it is the resampling part.
It's not the best effect there is and some people do use it way too much. It's actually very annoying to listen to some type of music that has no other effects on it. You know what music i speak of
Maybe those kids grow out of it soon.. who knows.

Not all effects are meant to be used continuously and constantly you know. Some tasty bitcrushing in segments can do wonders, just as much as the next crazy effect.

Glad you like it
Yes, I'm also guilty of putting chorus more often than not one guitar...
B.t.w.: the reverb I used here is Omniverb v1.
