EDIT: okay sorry, it looks like the clock IS set to "internal"
There are 2 other options...SPDIF and SMPTE...but I don't have any devices for it to sync to, so "internal" is the only one I can try. "Internal" is also the default setting.

Okay..I just tried the MOTU Ultralite on another computer I have, which runs:
Win XP Home, Service Pack 2
Dell XPS 400 (DXPO51)
Pentium 4, 3.2 GHz
1GB RAM
Both Lucent and Texas Instruments firewire cards
Works perfectly fine on that system!! ^^
In the meantime, does anyone happen to know why a MOTU Ultralite would be incompatible with my system?
My system:
Win XP Home, Service Pack 1 and 2 (either or)
Motherboard: Asus A7N8X
Athlon XP 2600+
2 GB of PC2700 RAM
ATi 256 MB X800 XL Video Card (AGP)
Both Lucent and Texas Instruments firewire cards
Does anyone else have a similar system (same motherboard, or athlon based system) working with a MOTU interface?

In a last ditch attempt, here. I figured the only thing I could do is buy a new computer..but since I don't have that kind of money right now, I bought a motherboard.

Some brandname I've never heard of...but it's like, impossible to find a Non Nforce Socket A motherboard that has what I need for under $40.
They have a 14 day return policy, and the thing was pretty cheap.
It uses the Via KT400 chipset instead of the NForce 2 I have right now, so hopefully that fixes the problem.

could also be due to the chipset of the firewire adapter you have/had in the machine
make sure sync is set to computer when the computer is there, not the same as internal (internal is when used stand alone)

Well, I don't think it's the firewire card. I tried both firewire cards in another computer and the Ultralite worked fine with them.
The only options to set sync are "Internal, SPDIF, and SMTPE", and the default is Internal. The "Internal" setting worked on the other computer.

Of course...who knows if it would still be working...I only tried it for a few minutes on that computer.
Anyways... I recently got another computer for myself. Athlon 64 3500+ with an Asus A8V-VM (i think..can't remember the model#, but it's a VIA chipset) micro atx, 2 gigs of ram, new hard drive and everything.
It was working fine for about 2 weeks...now all of a sudden I can't listen to music or watch video clips or play any sound without audio becoming EXTREMELY loud and clipped. It's almost as if the audio is +9999 dB clipping.
This is ridiculous.
Here's a short 30 sec. clip of what the audio is like...I managed to record this into audacity by routing the headphone output into the analog input...
This is with winamp at 1% volume...also the actual noise is louder, I just recorded it at a lower volume.
It's still loud...so...fair warning..

I honestly am beginning to believe that all electronic devices that say they are supposed to work together will never in fact work together. It seems like the more money I spend on something, the more problems it has.

No sound was being output from or input to the Ultralite.

I hate to say it but you tried everything except trying another make of soundcard. Firewire/USB can be tricky. To buy another PC to make your soundcard work is the wrong way round.

Could be an earth problem, if you had a laptop I would say try using the Ultralite with the laptop disconnected from the mains. A bit harder to do with a stationary PC. Check with someone elses PC to verify if the problem could be the Ultralite itself.

Talk to motu, for god's sake? They should replace it if you can't fix the problem (it may very well be a faulty unit!). Changing chipsets will only cost you assloads of money and is no guarantee of fixing any problem. Try on a friend's computer, if it still doesn't work, return it to motu-
