from site:

AuditionIT! simplifies the Auditioning of sample Files in Wave Format (.WAV)

It automatically queues up the wave files it finds, either as you change directories, through its recursive search functions, or through drag and drop from Windows Explorer.

You can then sit back and listen to the files play sequentially, picking the ones you like or are suitable for the project you are working on, skipping those that are unsuitable and selecting anything interesting by simply pressing the space bar.

When you have listened through, you can then recheck your selection, for example putting them in loop mode to see how much work you may have to do to get the loop right, check the BPM value of the file, or change its format, sampling rate or bit rate to suit. You can also change the peak level of files to balance the volume of your samples.

When you have selected the files you want, copy them from their source to a single directory so you know where they are when you need them, or drag and drop them straight into your sequencer or wave editor, all the major editors and sequencers such as Cubase , Cakewalk, Wavelab, Sound Forge support the dropping of files from AuditionIT!

I'm possibly a moron, and will check this when i get home from work, but I couldn't figure out how to SEARCH with AuditionIt.

In this case, I would love to find out I'm just dumb. :)

I can't do this. AuditionIt files won't drag into Highlife or Guru.

Anyone else have better luck?

I don't remember the name of the program, you can try to google something like "xp explorer wav preview", that will let you preview samples in your os explorer, then you can drag and drop from the explorer. highlife and guru supports drag and drop right?

I see no reason why you couldn't just use a programme like Media Monkey to do this? I know it's mainly used to catalog mp3's and stuff but it's basically an audio librarian and you don't have to just use it for mp3 or CD collections. It does all the cataloguing, searching, organising, and auditioning asked for plus it can read and convert just about any audio format under the sun, edit and add metatags etc. So instead of using it to catalog a music collection use it to catalog a sample collection. What's the difference?

I'll check out Total Commander again. But IIRC, I couldn't drag from it to Guru or Highlife in Sonar. Or maybe it was that didn't have an integrated audition. maybe the plugins will help with this? (I was checking so many, that I lost track of the names!)
PM me if you need any help setting it up. It does have integrated auditioning including compressed formats like FLAC and WavePack...

Some apps/VSTis just don't allow drag-and-drop from an external source. Not sure what can be done about it.

There are some great free plugins, such as AudioConverter...

MW: that just might do the trick! Thanks!

aMUSEd: I tried that, but many of those consumer programs won't let me drag from them into highlife or Guru. Possibly with the exception of Total Commander, speaking of which......

Mr. Vulich: Sonar/Highlife/Guru all support drag and drop wavs into their respective areas. I will PM you about integrated auditioning. Hopefully I'm thinking of the right program.

What I do know:
On AuditionIT, TotalCommander, LoopHorse, it seemed none of the programs would do all three of these:

1.) Search (with keywords)
2.) Drag and Drop into Sonar/Guru/Highlife
3.) Integrated Audition (no launching of external player)

Just trying to see if I can get a similar workflow when searching drums/samples as I do in Ableton or Reason, in cases where only Sonar is available.

It would downright comical, if after all this trouble, Sonar inplemented this in the new version. :)

Thanks all for the help.

I don't have those to try but it drags and drops into sequencers like Tracktion well enough.

SampleCatalog 1.2.4 IIRC does all of that. Works like a charm too.

aMUSEd: monkey did fine? I'm on it after work!
