You can have the samples be within a kit that is playing. Or maybe just a single velocity layer? Or if it is flash based, it would be tougher to get the sample stripped(although not impossible).
Also, it could be mp3 and still not be THAT bad sounding. But if you look at the free samples they have from this thread, they are shown in a demo with a kick drum on the site.

as far as i know i can record everything that comes in the audio in of my computer .. Really simple i would have just to edit it , but that was just my 2 cents ..
I find a demo song to be far more secure for a company ,and as far as drum is concerned better play with some music behind it

Yeah, it might very well be the easiest way. That would be up to them to figure out, and since what really matters is how a drum fits in the mix, that would be ideal anyways.

Thank you for your kindness with the free snare. I'd be glad to do some Gigastudio3 programming for you if needed - actually I'll be doing Gigastudio3 for myself anyway!Slate wrote:our 2.0 collection is being mapped out now and tests today confirmed that it sounds and works amazingly (tests were with Kontakt but it will be mapped for a lot more).

not only if we did that would the sample be mixed in a song, but it would be BETTER that way because the drum is going to end up in the context of the song. One of the things that make the Slate Samples so popular lately is their ability to stand out in a mix. I emailed Steven the idea of individual downloads.. we'll see.

When you consider that something like Addictive drums comes with 5 snares and 4 kicks for $250, it seems pretty fair to me at least that you'll be able to get the Elite collection which has 25 snares, and 18 kicks for around the same price. Plus its kinda cool to tell your clients that these are the same drums that you hear on a lot of big records.

When you consider Addictive Drums is a Vsti Instrument and the Steven Slate stuff is just a a sample collection............
To be honest I found the "high energy rock snare" to be really disappointing. Weak, lifeless and deleted in about ten minutes. If this is an indication of the quality in the rest of the collection I can't imagine them ending up on any "big records". In my opinion it looks like a case of hype over substance at this point.

You don't need to imagine it. Slate samples are used on alot of top shelf releases already. If this is an indication of the quality in the rest of the collection I can't imagine them ending up on any "big records".
I've read that CLA was blown away with this sample set when he recently heard them...Hype?
Hype is talk sans the walk...these samples were "walking" for a long time before all the talk...

I could care less about who is supposedly using these samples. I'm of the opinion that real "Big" producers aren't interested in "Me Too" content. Anyway like I say in my opinion and that's the only opinion that matters to me the "high energy rock snare" is a disappointment. There's better freeware content available *in my opinion*. Again if those samples are any indication of the rest of the collection then I don't see why any producer, big, small or bedroom would want to use them.s_sibs wrote:You don't need to imagine it. Great! The less pros that use them the better my mixes will sound.Again if those samples are any indication of the rest of the collection then I don't see why any producer, big, small or bedroom would want to use them.

Teksonik, I'm sorry you are so upset with the free snare. Just as its free to use, its free to not use. I would also like to say that this snare is one of 25 snares in the colletion. I'll say that again. 25 SNARES. My point being, there are all kinds of different sounds, so even if this tight cracky Deftonesy snare isn't right for you, you can check out the dozen or so demos on the page and probably hear one that is! It should also be noted that STEVEN SLATE DRUMS *WILL* be a VSTi instrument in about... ehhhh... nother month.
As for the whole big mixer thing, its really an honor working with some of these talented guys. Having Chris Lord Alge think these samples kickass is a real trip, because I love that guy's mixes. He's a super cool guy, as is the owner of Resonate studios, John Van Nest. All of the Elite Samples were custom made for a select few mixers who were in the need of the samples for the records they were working on at the time. The advantage of having these guys beta test is very apparent, their feedback made me work a lot harder.
So far I'm happy to say that Teksonik is in the minority of reviews on the new snare. A lot of guys are digging it and calling it very Deftones/Tool sounding. Its probably the tightest tune snare in the collection, and I love the crack. Here is that demo again so you don't have to fish earlier in the thread for it:

Scott, great to hear from you, I hope you can send me some mix clips soon, I'd love to hear what you got going on!

How is the snare mixed in the demo mp3? Did it have some EQ and compression on it, or is it used without treatment?
The snare sounds great in the demo, which wav sample did you use, the cracks or the hards?

Hi MrM, the snare (and kick sample) was used with NO additional eq or compression. The snares were all cracks and the kicks were all hards. It was mixed in a little Pro Tools LE session. I had my assistant prepare it for the web in his rig. I believe he used a TINY bit of the Wavess SSL buss compressor, and maybe gave it some air with about 1db @10k (I can confirm this later but that what it sounds like to me).
This snare sample, SNARE 19, is nice and tight and cracky. If you like looser thuddier stuff btw (like I do mostly), listen to the first demo on my page. I can tell you the drummer for my own band thinks the new SNARE 19 its the shiznit and a lot of the metal guys are loving it because its Deftones like sound. If anyone has any problems using the new snare, or its Z4 real room ambience file, feel free to email me at support@stevenslatedrums.com
Read the manual to see how the Z4 works along with the Z1.

Hey, Steve,
Thanks a lot for this!
If one wanted to get a more 80's metal tone with your snares, like anything produced by Michael Wegener (Skid Row, etc), how would one go about it?
Is it better to take the samples more dry or are the Z4's processed the same way and they would do well with some bus compression, big reverb, eq, or if you already used some of those things (comp, eq, room ambience, etc) would adding it to the Z4's sound like a mish-mash afterward?
I am sort of new to the whole drum production thing, and trying to get over a long period of frustration stemming from trial and error (but mostly error)!
(Hey, did you ever consider creating an e-book on how to product killer drum sounds? I'd buy it in a heart beat!)
Thanks, again,
- Paul
