After the test I'll report the results to Ableton so they may be able to fix it. (Or I'll fix it, if it's a bug in Z2)

In the meantime, if it is indeed related to latency (or PDC), I can offer anyone a version of Zebra that does not report latency. This will introduce a little delay of 1/3 ms, which is less than MIDI and roughly corresponds to 30 cm more distance from the speakers.

So, here we are. Been on the phone again and it seems to be a nasty little bug. It's most likely not directly related to the latency thing, but it's a confusing order of data flowing from Live to plugin.

There's naturally no word about *when* a fix comes, but I'll be working closely with them to find a proper workaround.

urs, can you clarify? ie: problem on your end or theirs? i too notice this drop using live and a few other plugs. thnx. (note: absynth and zebra seem to be the big ones here, so my guess is it's on live's end)

Well, we have an idea based on the file Greifenkeil sent me and the intel I got from phone/tests/debugging. It seems to be a faux pas on Ableton's side, and it's not easy to work around. Basically what happens is, the Note On comes literally a sample too early, right before the plug is notified that playback starts. And every good synth resets its guts on playback start, to keep LFOs and stuff in sync. So, what you hear is, Zebra (or any other synth) plays the note for a sample or two, then resets which in case of Zebra is the same as an All-Notes-Off.

The handling of the situation may differ from synth to synth, some may even play normally. Latter is cool for relatively simple stuff, but not for stuff that features an fx rig and what not. It may even differ between AU, DXi and VSTi of the same synth. However, if Absynth is in the same boat, Zebra is in good company. They'll fix it soon!

Nevertheless, I've been thinking of a workaround. I'll post one as an optional install as soon as possible.

Actually, those are the only two I can specifically recall having that problem with (and I do the start-point nudge "workaround" almost unconsciously now, since it's always just the "first note" at 1.1.1... nothing to it really).....

Hmmm, so perhaps they share a "bug" of some sort? Then again, those are the only two I commonly start a composition off with in Live (these days, my starting template in Live has three Z2s pre-loaded, as it's become my go-to synth for composing), so.............. who knows?

Urs, I'll check and see if I can get a "proof-of-concept" file together for you as well, but no guarantee.... at the moment, I only specifically recall one occurrence offhand, and in that one Absynth was the offending synth..... maybe I can just duplicate it easily....?

will try....
