I find layering to work well and using a multiband compressor to punch them up.

A big thing is to not be afraid to use loops (from records, off sample cd's, or made by you). They add texture and character...maybe one has some crackle added and another has hiss added and another has bleeps added, another with people talking. All that adds something special and can help them sit better in a mix.

Last but not least I think of my samples and loops as generations. Some of them might be 1st generation and fairly clean while others might be 10th generation and quite a bit more grimey.

Hope that helps. The most important thing in my opinion is using the sound that is best for the mix....that's what makes blend so well and still be punchy.

The MPC60 Vol 1 (TR) & Vol 2 (Vinyl) are certainly a good source of solid drums for Hip Hop... and the Tape808 is getting props as some of the best TR808 sample you can buy...
