This is a song that I wrote yesterday specifically for this thread (all rights reserved of course). It is loop based. The 'before' is a dry mix of tracks- no other effects added.
The 'after' is using effects from the library only- nothing else, on every individual track. Give it time to load- it is worth it I think. Both before and after are sent to a look-ahead brickwall limiter to bring all levels together to show it as a pseudo-final mix.
Really listen to the new snare- completely transformed into an 80's compressed to tape snare. complete with 'swish'

The compression presets that I have created took a lot of testing and retesting, but should not be seen as the full capacity of Nebula. Giancarlo has placed a lot under the hood that it is already able to do, that I have not even begun to implement.
Some of the original beta testers' additions to the Nebula library are very detailed and complex, but the main thing that needs to advance is the absolute response in timing to fast transients. Still, items like Gian's Yakuzi are in my opinion, as nice or better than most competing high end software plug-in comps on drums.

The drums I used here are individual single shots from a Mick Fleetwood sample collection. I have a mix of different drums from different sources on the cdsoundmaster.com site.
I have others I am going to post of me playing my set. It uses an API-style pre on snare, Neve-clone on kick, FMR RNP's on toms, and extra tracks for room mics. More than anything, I like using that in mono to show the changes the pre's and eq's make in the kick and snare. I will try using that session for more subtle compression settings as well.

No problem about the good comments on the library. This should interest you though. Bmanic was talking about instant compression that giancarlo has now, and that will unlock some serious potential in Neb 3. But, the uber awesome thing is that he taught me how to tweak the PROG RATE in the .xml file. So now I can use your compressors, which are some of the fastest with stock Nebula settings, but I can now use the Yakuza, which I love now (and yes I think it's top of the chain as far as software compression goes, maybe tops I mean Nebula in general). Basically I change my program rate to about 200 from I think 20000. Now my compressors act super fast, they still breath wrong, but I just have to back off the attack and release (esp) and move up liquidity, as well as the EVFS page, and use Peak or RMS instead the RMS 17. Very very very good sound, I haven't tried your compressors with this tweak, but I know tape presets benefit from this too. At the price of about 30% CPU, which I think is 7% across 4 cores. Just good times with Nebula 3. Really good times.

Precision, is this .xml editing a Nebula 3 only thing? I have Nebula 2 commercial and am also having the same compression problems.

Are you editing the programs in Nebula or the actual xml in the Nebula repository?

OK, it is time for audio example for 5-15-08!

This is the Retro-02-Mid eq. The 'before' is the way the guitar part was processed originally. The 'after' part I thought I would use the eq to give a warm sound reminiscent of some Jimmy Page tones.

The thing that is nice is that you can warm it up without losing the high end strum: you can hear the pick clearly but gain the smooth mids.
There is a REALLY long space (15secs) between before and after- sorry for that!

This is an image of the files in the above order from left to right.
The important thing to notice, is that the only peak transient that has been limited to a point where it affects the actual peak, was done to the "before" file before any instances of the GroupBus preset were added.

Notice how the waveforms are growing from the harmonics added, almost precisely how a high end signal path should be with each gain stage in front of the next. You can add more and more input overload to the xfo's, op-amps, and tape compression emulations all the way to an extra master bus compression, and the waveform continues to "grow" without cutting off the transients, yet rounding and lengthening them out without an audible effect of changing the timing of the original program material. Notice also that low and medium volume levels material is very evenly and noticeably being compressed by the signal chain while still maintaining the same dynamic correllation to the louder peaks.
Truly what sets real analog signal limiting and harmonic distortion apart from simple 'warming' algorithms or even smooth look-ahead software limiting.

Bmanic taught me this, so all credit goes to him. I'm sure someone can teach more.

Copy your Nebula.dll file (not the reverb) name it Nebula Compressors.dll.

Copy the Nebula.xml file and name it Nebula Compressors.xml (has to be the same as the dll file).

In the .xml file open it with note pad there should be a Prog Rate, with a number like 20000, change that number to say 200 or 100.

Now in the compressor program, go to the EDIT page found under PROG. Turn on the RATE S control, and lower the number over top of the RATE S. The lower the number the faster the compressor reacts. The lower the number the more your CPU is eaten.

Now, there is another section the EVFS page, I think it's in GLOB then the MORE button. You change the RMS 17 on the first of the 3, I don't think the other 2 are active, to RMS or AVG or PEAK, not the 17's, you'll get different behavior, smoother, holds on to transients differently. I don't know how accurate this is to the real gear, but I don't care because it sounds good.

That's it, you can go in the KERN page and lower the values of the FREQ'd and TIME to get better CPU use, or just render, Also I think you can lower the KERN in the MAST page, or the KERN page (KERN didn't work for me, haven't tried master) and then have numeric programs. Meaning no distortion, just the compression behavior. Depends on the application, good for vocals I'd say. Or anything you don't want to impart much color to.

That should cover it for you. And anyone else.

I gotta bump this thread to say how great this collection is! I'm using the Group Bus preset on all my buses and the master bus, and it adds a warmth that I can't get from anything else. It is fairly subtle, but once you add a bunch of these plugins to a mix it really gels and sounds nice and round. I'm loving the RetroValve1 program on vocals, too.

This is simply a must-have collection for any commercial Nebula user! Great work, mangel123!!
