Currently, some of my waves are being put into sfz format; here is an example:

<group>
loop_mode=loop_sustain
cutoff=400
fil_veltrack=6400
ampeg_release=0.4

<region>
sample=EA Rol8C3.wav
hikey=e2
pitch_keycenter=c1

<region>
sample=EA Rol8G3.wav
lokey=f2
hikey=a2
pitch_keycenter=g1

<region>
sample=EA Rol8C4.wav
lokey=a#2
hikey=e3
pitch_keycenter=c2

<region>
sample=EA Rol8G4.wav
lokey=f3
hikey=a3
pitch_keycenter=g2

<region>
sample=EA Rol8C5.wav
lokey=a#3
hikey=e4
pitch_keycenter=c3

<region>
sample=EA Rol8G5.wav
lokey=f4
hikey=a4
pitch_keycenter=g3

<region>
sample=EA Rol8C6.wav
lokey=a#4
hikey=e5
pitch_keycenter=c4

<region>
sample=EA Rol8G6.wav
lokey=f5
hikey=a5
pitch_keycenter=g4

<region>
sample=EA Rol8C7.wav
lokey=a#5
pitch_keycenter=c5

The loop points are stored with the wave files so there's less typing and the files can be created with notepad so there is really no need for an editor/creator unless you want one. I have not tried velocity switching, yet, but it should require only one Osc which would save voices in Rhino if this format is supported in the future.

Not being able to fine tune samples is a drag and the files will be bigger than 'Tick's compressed waves... Having both supported would be good.

The way I see it, sfz would replace the Rhino .txt format. So you could still pack your files into a Rhino vfs... Also, I might make the vfs format (and load/save source code) public if there's any interest.

Good tut Daniel, I'm glad it's here... maybe sometime I'll get enough material together to make some .vfs files, that would be nice. I'm in a big kick of going around recording everything with the crappy mic in my dell handheld (which is actually better than my cheap dynamic mic). Once I run it through the audio editor they clean up OK, sometimes even turn out decent!
In the future there will be robots!

You really only need one wave file to make a .vfs and something unique. Strange noises in Rhino add a lot of character layered within a sound. That is how many of my favorite patches started.

I'm a relatively recent user, but I want to chime in to add that one of the reasons that I was scared off from creating my own .vfs files is that it seems like an arduous task. If .sfz support would make things easier then I would definitely say go for it. Though I fully understand that it might not be a top priority at the moment. I would rather see you focus your efforts on the main task first.

Thanks to Daniel and Tick for the info though! It makes me think that it might be worth giving it a go even as things are now.

I have a ton of hardware sources here, both analog and digital and somewhere in between, as well as other natural sonic food, that I would love to tap into someday to explore this area and perhaps share (if I come up with anything of interest).

If Rhino had the ability to load or import .sfz files I would buy it again and import the entire Anomaly library and make new presets for it.... :D

I've been missing this beastie lately anyway.....

Does anomaly uses all features of the sfz format, like envelopes, filters and lfo ? Many of the features in the format are redundant with what can be done with Rhino... importing only sample information, velocity and keyboard mapping wouldn't be too hard, though.

I only use the .sfz file to map the files across the keyboard, set root notes and loop information.... :D

Post

Could you send me such a sfz file with the samples ? I'll see what I can do :)

Post

Great :D

I'm on the way out right now.... When I get back I will send you some samples....

I have sent you a link to some samples..... :D

Yes, I was just looking at them. I don't see any using velocity splits, so this wouldn't require much changes to import them into the internal Rhino format. The only issue I have here is that most of them use stereo samples, where Rhino oscillators are mono, for the time being...

Great to see this thread revived, as it reminded me (after I seem to own each and any of Daniel's outstanding banks now :) ) that I have tons and gigabytes of fieldrecordings (low quality like many of us have, a minidisc recorder and a sony lavalier mic is all I have, self-made windshield, er, ummm :hihi:) - but the idea to layer some of those sounds with other material is great - so I'll have to learn to use the vfs stuff too... And I'm curious what will come out of the sfz ideas... Rene Ceballos was very proud in the past as he made sfz and sfz+, and the new format.

Post

That would not be a problem as I have mono versions of all the files in .sf2 format.... I could just extract the wav files and place them in a different folder with the .sfz text files and they should all work....

I have made a test .vfs file of some sounds I am converting for Rhino.....

While we hopefully wait for .sfz import I though I would convert my Dreams and Nightmares 1 soundset into .vfs format.

The file right now is just a test and contains some of the Dreams and Nightmares sounds and also 2 sounds from Anomaly IV.

If someone could download this and play with it for a bit and let me know if there are any problems, I would appreciate it.... :D

It has been a while since I tried to do this....
