I think I've got a passably recognisable /z/ this time...

billstei's FFT "Zebra", hakey's constructed "I Am Zebra"

I see how you've got the 'rrr' using a kind of amplitude modulation and the 'szz' with a single HPF sweep, rather than my complicated MSEGed noise source. Clever stuff!
And it certainly does have a Teutonic sound to it.
Here's one more version: I are Zeb
This time it's polyphonic and pitch tracks the keys so that chords can be played.

Nice how well that sounds even in the upper register.Howard wrote:"Clockwork Orange" version of hakey's latest:hakey wrote:Well, here's one last attempt: I am Zeb

And here's one more 'last attempt'
CK I Am Zebra
This time I've removed the pauses between the words and used the Eleven OSC mode - AT is wired to Detune.
I think I'm 95% happy with this version, so it could even be my last try! I have a minor niggle with my use of Env2 to dip VCF1 at the beginning of the /z/ sound - fine in legato mode as ENV2 is triggered once, however, in poly mode the MSEGs trigger once but ENV2 retriggers with each key stroke adding a VCF dip in the wrong place.
I can't use MSEG3 as that is wired to both VCFs and I'd rather not do without the Noise source altogether (as Howard did) as, besides the /sz/ sound, I've also used it to add definition for the /ah/ in 'am' and the /bh/ in 'zebra'. And I quite like the overall slight 'breathyness' that it adds.
Is there such a thing as a 'legato/poly' mode in the world of synths, or have I imagined that?

Isn't that what the "Single" MSEG mode does?hakey wrote:Is there such a thing as a 'legato/poly' mode in the world of synths, or have I imagined that?

Yes it does, but a global poly/legato would treat the ENVs in the same way too - an ENV is triggered only on the first keystroke and, so long as one key is continuously held, subsequent keystrokes would not retrigger it - anyway that's how I think it might work.Howard wrote:Isn't that what the "Single" MSEG mode does?hakey wrote:Is there such a thing as a 'legato/poly' mode in the world of synths, or have I imagined that?

If I understand this right, those subsequent keystrokes have to play new notes immediately. So what happens when you release all but one key - do those notes stop? If no, it's just like using a sustain pedal. If yes, in effect you have individual (gate) envelopes plus an overall envelope (which MSEG can do).hakey wrote:...a global poly/legato would treat the ENVs in the same way too - an ENV is triggered only on the first keystroke and, so long as one key is continuously held, subsequent keystrokes would not retrigger it - anyway that's how I think it might work.

Yes, you're quite right. In Zebra if a poly/legato type envelope is needed the MSEGs do that. I just ran out of MSEGs, but then using 4 MSEGs is unlikely to happen in most sensibly designed patches.Howard wrote: If I understand this right, those subsequent keystrokes have to play new notes immediately. Since I'm mostly a preset mangler (not designing patches from scratch) I've continued on the works of Howard and billstei. It seems Zebra's is learning to pronunciate better and better all the time thanks to logopedics:
--> Have a listen (WAV)
Or click here to download the preset
It's such a wonderful synth!

At some point I really should re-visit the original patch to see if the advantages that Blueberry Thing has (mostly a matter of convenience, but still...) over the Octave scripts will improve the sound. The main advantage is that the parts of the sample that have greater harmonic transients would be split into smaller (Wave) pieces, and then the MSEG timing tweaked to compensate accordingly.

You're really much into the technical details of Zebra, including scripting. I feel you can do an uncanny valley type of voice preset for Zebra.
