I would say high mids and beyond, but you get the idea - as the harmonics get higher, have less amplitude, and are more frequent, phase issues become less apparent.

However, samples and loops of things like claps and hats can have small amounts of sub content due to ambience, analog circuit noise, tape hiss, or vinyl bumps and dust. They can all gang up to steal ur headroomz. But as I said, a bit of untidy is good. Listen to see if it imparts a nice color before rolling off.

Side chaining is an excellent way to separate the bass from the kick but when you're side chaining you're ducking the bass (lowering the volume), so that they're not really occupying the same space in time. it IS possible to have a kick and a subby bass playing at the same time in the same frequency space, you just have to be aware of phase, volume and frequency content (as well as a bit of luck in finding the right pairing).

Some of my favourite tunes have these MASSIVE kick and bass combos, they sound impossible but after a bit of analysis of the waveform and a FFT spectrograph you can figure out what's going on. That's how I learnt most of this stuff - looking at and listening to other peoples tunes.

Thank you!

Hi guys. Apparently Voxengo's curve eq is VST only and I can't afford Melda's eq. Any other analyzing eq's out there that you might recommend?

Thanks again to the professor of bass - you rock TankEyes!

Serves me right for not googling it first. Looks like Logic HAS a match eq already.

Sorry guys. Nevermind the last post.

This might be useful to anyone reading this, it covers a few things about kicks, keys and side chaining. Also stuff on layering octaves of subs and other waves.

The one thing I find hard now that I feel I master the concept of tuned kicks is when I remix tracks that are in the "wrong key". I find that kick drums fit best around 43 to 55 hz. That is between f1 and a1. Remixing a track that is in for example c minor using this concept always sounds odd to me when you are using a kick tuned to the key.

Ever thought about writing a book TankEyes?

Wicked stuff :tu:
