Another point to consider is the ability to communicate your intentions as a composer to other musicians.
I've through this when I almost became semi-professional musician, I felt the need to learn how to read and write music so that I could express my ideas to my band mates. I learned to read and write basic songs but because I am a drummer I never worried too much about harmony, scales, etc.

( but there is a chance to come up with pleasing music !! )
I believe that you don't need to know the rules to create pleasing music, but I agree that it may speed up your work 'cause it gives you directions of what might sound good and what definitely sounds bad.
