Rs-Met Func Shaper has soft/hard clip presets, also oversampling.

I don't think it was mentioned yet, read page 1 yesterday, don't feel like reading it again today.

The "problem" with oversampling in a clipper though, is that normally you need one of (1) some headroom to allow for filter ripple when downsampling, (2) clip again after down sampling, (3) use a filter with monotonic step response which will lose you plenty of high-frequencies.

Option (1) is really ideal, but annoying because there is pretty much no upper bound on the headroom required; in practice you usually need a 1-2 dB or so depending on how hard you clip. It seems this is what Elephant uses (at least in "clip" mode, threshold 0dB, oversampling and raise input: output goes above 0dB when driven hard).

Option (2) is IMO a bit questionable unless you combine it with at least a bit of fixed headroom, but I guess this is pretty common too.

Option (3) works, but if you add pre-emphasis to compensate for the the high-frequency roll-off, you usually end up with a bit too much high-frequency distortion too.

Alternative you could just allow some ripple over the threshold, and use a very fast limiter afterwards to clean it up in case you exceed the reserve. Compared to just using a limiter, you (hopefully anyway) need much less gain control so the limiting can be much less obvious (and act faster, and whatever).

For clipping of individual tracks or for distortion (anywhere exact peak level is irrelevant), I agree that oversampling is the way to go.
