We also have the example of Rene partnering in whatever arrangement evolved from early behind-the scenes work to creating instruments more directly for Cakewalk/Roland. It may have been useful and beneficial for Rene and Cakewalk, but it has really shortened the life of products like Dimension and Rapture. Once they were packaged with a Sonar release, development ceased. That may have been mutual agreement. I'm sure it's more fun to do new product than maintain and enhance existing products, but an awful lot of potential got left on the table.

Then also there was the recent thread on Harry Grohs at Virsyn who seems to just keep developing products with a rather singular focus and doesn't put a lot into marketing or any but the most basic customer relations. To be honest that's probably how a lot of code developers would be at business, myself included.

There are obviously a lot of ways to go about product development for this marketplace, I think Urs stands out as an example of how to build and maintain customer loyalty even beyond the excellence of his production. And I think it's also clear he earns his living with an awful lot of work.
