I'm not sure I would call it vague, since it has all the notes of the standard minor, except one which is a semitone lower. That's pretty close.

there is a whole tone aspect to this scale: Eb F G A B that can provide contrast and maybe a bridge to another area (eg., A major or lydian / Eb major or lydian)... or just a striking coloristic thing

at either end of that construction is a semitone, so there is symmetry to play with for the more abstract-minded. that suggests 'mode 2 of C mel. minor'...
