I really like the way the melody twists and turns on this Tim. It has a nice modal quality to it-I think I hear Dorian and Lydian-very friggin cool.

And the groove has a nice swinging feel to it (and a modern flare?).

I'll be giving this a few listens.

This is my hands down fave from you since I've been on board/a fan?

I wonder if you would share the instruments you used on hear?

I liked most of what your doing.
Didn't care much for your lead sound choices.
I got bored with the 'swing' in the seq after a min.
I like seqs like this alot, but I couldn't take it seriously with it's 'skippy' swing beat.
EDIT: just noticed the swing beat was what any1particular liked about it..among other things. I guess i'm just old school.

Wow Chuck. That was quite an opening comment there. I never studied music theory to any significant level at school or afterwards, so I had to use my friend Google to find out what you were talking about!! I think I understand the theory regarding the intervals in the different modal scales, but would be hard-pressed to be able to pick up on different modes used within a piece of music. That sort of ability must come from years of study and practice.

As far as this composition goes, the tune came together pretty quickly. I had the main repeating lead motif at a very early stage, and then came up with the intro bassline. The chords and arps followed once I had a feel for the melody and rhythm.

Glad you liked the groove. That wasn't entirely my usual style but it seemed to go with the music. The bass/drums during the last 2 minutes were a late addition during the recent remix. I felt I needed to change things around a little, plus it gave me an extra drop.

By the time I made the original version of this track in Nov 2009, I was gaining in confidence and I think I was able to take greater risks with the music (sometimes).

Apart from the reverb on the clap, there were no effects used other than those on the VSTs themselves

I chose to use "harder" lead sounds to provide contrast with the "softer" pads elsewhere in this track. Of course, those choices would probably be different if I could afford to buy some decent hardware. Everything here is played on softsynths, although the drums are EnergyXT samples. In a couple of years I may be able to splash some cash on a decent hardware synth, although I currently have no idea what that might be. I fancy a Waldorf Q, but I fear that it will no longer be available.

The swing thing on here just felt right to me. On earlier tracks I usually used a much "heavier" drum rhythm, but I felt this track would benefit from something lighter to go with the jaunty melody.
