@ttoz - what's a "FlipFlopper"? Are you the uber-poster? :D

Yea I get that. Between the roids and the daily show. My politeness margin keeps slippin into the red ttoz. What's a fool to do?
Well good luck with this.
I'll donate my Soliton soundset to the winner...that is if they didn't already steal it.

ttoz; I'm in for this. I have tried to blatantly give things away I no longer use only to be told I could not by the software houses. If you can motivate the software companies to be less draconian about their gift policies, including inheriting support and stuff like that as part of this, that would positively rule.

I've seriously tried to give away a great deal of un-used/rarely-used stuff. They can't stop us donating via paypal though :)

I'm in for this no question, but make sure not to put strings on it so the people who receive the gifts/charities don't feel pressured to make something of themselves just only ask them to try and make some music.

Also, I would make sure not to put any judgment on the outside; like "you only qualify if you can prove you're a talented musician" or anything like this. But then here is the hardest part; how do we know if someone is honest?

I can think of 5 people @ KVR I would give to off the top of my head but it would embarrass them to share it publically. Spontaneous donations and stuff is a good idea but we need to think this through. :)

What about instead of a formal organization and prizes, we do something where there isn't a charity it's more like a forum based angel system, where people can be mentored and taken under the wing so to speak from a known expert? Like this might work; in a DAW context someone is an expert (like for example I have enough credibility here though no certificate explaining it, of how to do stuff in Ableton Live very well, enough to get a newb kicked off) so what if the person cannot afford Ableton but wants to use it, we donate to get a copy of intro or something, then open the door to help them.

The giving part is the best part of this idea, but as soon as you add money into it, the sharks will come. If I give something away it's for a reason that I want to help or hope that what I give is going to get used, not to get rewards or anything; the giving is selfless and compassionate without strings.

If we put any kind of organization around this, even ad-hoc forum threads and stuff, it could take the spirit of the giving away.

Maybe we could start a forum holiday? Like Help a newb day, or gift a plugin day, this aligns with the spirit of it, gives people a reason to remember to do it, and also spreads love.

Sometimes life is so busy we forget how lucky we are and to share it.

Though I have to say, and this is my final thought right now; the way I give back too is by purchasing software from the developers here. By trying to be around to answer a question if it's unanswered, and by supporting the commodity markets (skins, presets, samples, etc. - these last ones have evaded me as of late but if you recall there was a time when I was younger when I did this (and I'm not looking for a pat on the back for mentioning it just saying to those reading if you have the time, give back in any way you can and we make things better for everyone).

I like the idea of giving, but fear putting rules and regulations around that spirit is going to end badly.

The holiday approach is the only thing I can think of, where we had a Developer Challenge, perhaps we could have a week long Share the Love kind of thing, where we take time to go above and beyond as a group. Power in numbers kind of thing. Maybe see a WTB thread in marketplace and kick in for that.

The selflessness of these acts would I think bounce back and breed a very good positive momentum that is needed here, but we have to be careful about how we do it to not cheapen it you know? Sometimes the spontaneity of a good deed is as important as the deed itself.

Unfortunately aside from the 5 people I can think of I don't know who is needing what. So I'm interested but cautious.

 I'm glad to be in good company with good people.

True.

I don't know what the end result would be, if it's to stop even just 1 pirated copy of something not free, to encourage a user to stay on the right path, or if it's to kindle new talent into the economy of KVR/music scene, or what.

Slippery slope here to be sure.

ttoz what made you think of this? Not that it matters but if we knew more about your motivation it might help dissuade critics from bringing the idea down before it has a chance to grow legs.

He is an uber-poster :)

Flip Flopper came about years ago.. when we noticed Mr. TTOZ would buy a product and then later sell this product. THEN again and later in time would buy the same product again.. and may or may not sell it again. :o

Many KVRians got some good deals on used products as a result of such actions.

The mystery of the flipfloppyness is still... a mystery.

Unsure if I'm allowed to share this.. but its been years and I feel the need to speak. ttoz has given me a few bits of software in the past.. back when freeware was a much lower quality and I was a completely broke student. I had a few other KVR regulars donate software to me too back then. What a blessing to me it was!

I've donated and bought software for other kvrians as well in the past.. it feels good to give to people you know will use the software and not let it collect dust.

There is a lot of great freeware synths and effects these days.

Not so much in the freeware Hosts though.. REAPER is the cheapest 'major' host I can think of off the top of my head. Perhaps someone out there is or has been using a Pirated copy of Cubase or Logic for sometime because they can't afford it and we can correct that by coming together to get them a license and encouraging them to stay legit.

The person's moral compass would have to be in working order first I suspect.. that is to say.. Either they would have to be without pirated software or they would have to at least be willing to give up all pirated software if they received anything from this event.

Of course we can't police that, it would have to be on honor. Perhaps make them sign a document anyways just to make it a bit more 'real' and hit home.

At least.. Those are my thoughts on the idea.

actually i came out about this a while ago that i had medical diagnosed sever OCD which didn't help at all, and i will probably always buy and sell but you must have seen the activity is 1/10th of what it used to be as i am starting to get a grip these days :))

Glad you got some use out of the donations. That's awesome :) And i remember you were a bit struggling those days, kind of why i wanted to, and kind of a perfect example of a recipient of this sort of system i am trying to set up.

Yes you have slowed down considerably.. hence why I used 'got' (past tense) because you don't buy/sell/buy anywhere near how you used to. Had no idea it was a medical diagnosis though... Go you on working through the spiderwebs. :) :)

I even had someone mail me an old motherboard and CPU from here yearsss ago that I used for quite awhile. :o

Someone recently surprised an active and supportive fellow KVR user with a gift from his favorite dev. Maybe there's a way to organize and encourage this. Some way so members can anonymously gift other members (maybe the devs could "sign up" and provide a small discount for these purchases).. The way to vet them would be through KVR participation (i.e. you could discourage the sharks by making one of the eligibility tests based on KVR date of membership, etc.) This would be fair and ensure people don't just sign up to KVR for the free ride.

I'm sure there's holes in my logic too - just throwing something out there to help keep the ball rolling.

ttoz - HA - I'm Live and Logic on the Mac also. Got mine around the same time.
(mini-mac-v-windows-thread-hijack: anyone easily offended please ignore!)
I'm a Windows dev (!) and have three OSs on my Mac - I use the Mac for music, graphics, etc. when possible. My conversion was when I couldn't get a used Midi controller to work on XP - spend 8 hours downloading drivers, etc. Finally, assuming I'd been had and the controller was bad, I plugged it into my son's Mac (he was on board before me!), and had it running with Garage Band in 30 seconds. Turns out XP (at the time) generic MIDI drivers conflicted with and Logictech QuickCam drivers (only about a million of those). :-o )
