For metal tone? Stop using Guitar Rig. There are much better (and FREE) ampsims that kick GR's ass when metal tones are concerned. LePou, AcmeBarGig, TSE X30 (or X50), etc. Couple this with God's cab IRs (also FREE) and you're in metal land before you know it.

I've tried, but the sound is crappy, Maybe I'm doing something wrong ...

It took me at least two or three months of constant experimentation and tweaking, to get decent results, when I started out learning how to craft guitar tones with Guitar Rig.

...and I'm still learning, nearly two years later.

You should expect the same from any amp/cab sim you're interested in. Presets generally won't work for sampled guitar libraries.. so, expect a steep learning curve when you dive in and start trying to make your own guitar tone patches.

Yeah, but even YOUR presets has a poor sound, so there must be a problem somewhere !

You gotta take additional channel strip/mastering eq and compression/limiting into consideration as well.

I do a lot of that to even up a mix.. so what you hear in the raw preset isn't exactly what you're gonna hear in the final track. Sometimes it's not even close.

Rick, Have you upgraded to Guitar rig 5? The upgrade is only $39, until the end of July. Amplitube slash sounds good too.

Bridge Pickup usage, whatever guitar you use. At least for rhyhtm, lead should be neck.

Then, pre the amp, raise the volume a bit to give it a higher input signal for the amp itself (either with a stomp box sans drive, just volume or with a simple gain plugin). Don't overdo it with the input gain of the hi-gain amp.

Tweak EQ to your liking, add delay/reverb to your liking.

Important is that you play the guitar "dynamic".

The "Simul Analog Guitar Suite" (nice find with the GUI version btw - lost that one, so thanks) is a good start. Though remember that this version doesn't need IR's as cabinet. Else, tons of great amp sims (heads) mentioned already. Even Amplitube Free (Custom Shop mode) works if you know how to use stomp boxes.

Important to know: your individual tracks should sound a bit "boring" and "lowend lacking". This way the guitars cut through better in a mix. If they're great sounding on their own (sans vocals, bass, drums, etc), then you did something wrong or you're doing guitar instrumentals.

The rest is trial and error.

I've been using GR5 for a few months now (came with the latest Komplete). It's somehow a hundred times better sounding than 4. Not sure what they did to it exactly, to pull that off.. but I like it.

Not really interested in Amplitube 2 (or Slash).. though I almost went for the $99 deal they are currently running. Was sorta scared off by various reported problems with it.. so I'm prolly just gonna pass.

For the Death Metal stuff I'm doing, I find that NO dynamics actually gives me a better result. I lock down the 'Morph VMT' amount to about 80% on all the guitars.

Gives me that sorta mechanical, technical sound I need. When I introduce dynamics it loses that, in your face, aggressive punch I need.

Don't get technical with me, please. I don't own Electri6ity, just giving general hints.

If you want mechanical sound, that's fine. But a real guitar is not mechanical either. So turn that up and use a compressor pre the FX chain instead. This gives you back slight nouances in what you are after, and you can still compress the crap out of the signal with an overdriven amp.

Another important thing to know:
LPF of the guitar. And since that library sounds very lowend on it's own, maybe even some HPF up until 40-50Hz with a 12dB/oct filter at least.

This give you even more character for the amp to work with.

And finally:
There are as much horror stories about AT3 as there are for GR4/5.

I don't own a guitar.. I'm a computer geek..

To clarify.. Electri6ity has two 'Morphs' you can control.. either with a controller (mod wheel), keyboard velocity or midi automation.

The 'Morph AMT' controls the (A)rticulations (mutes through sustained picks), and the 'Morph VMT' accesses the various levels of pick strength/(V)olume.

I have keyboard velocity set up to control the AMT (basic articulations, mutes through sustains), and use midi automation to keep the VMT (pick strength/volume) at a steady 80%.

Unenlagia may not be using a heavy enough pick strength, which may be causing the patch to sound 'bad'. The mod wheel will usually default the VMT to 0%.. which would be like trying to get an aggressive Metal sound from a guitar, by using a feather as a pick...

That's what I've heard. Most guitarists seem to actually hate their results with Guitar Rig (and amp/cab sims in general).

I like the chain setups and controller modifiers I can create with it. Not only for guitars.. but for synths and drums as well. Reminds me a lot of what I used to be able to do with a Reason combinator rack.

Amplitube looks like sort of a step backward, in terms of total control (can only drag and drop effects in a chain, then shift them around. no modifiers).. but maybe I'm not seeing the whole picture.

I may still go for the $99 deal though, just to have some extra amps & cabs. I've got a few more days to decide.
