I'm trying to emulate what I hear, but from what i've gathered... most "Producers" just lay tracks then play CDs (or Tracktor) in the clubs... more adventurous types bring Ableton along to mess with live with a controller (ala Ritchie Hawtin, etc.).
Back in the stone-age "new wave" days, we would play it all in with our hands (I had a hardware sequencer that was a nightmare to compose on)... cheaper to just use the keyboard and mod wheel like filthy, primitive animals... but old age (and a minor stroke) has robbed me of my dexterity, just cant play in time like I used to
But I can fake it by "playing" (key triggering) sequences, using the knobs for expression... playing the mod wheel and changing clips with the computer keys. I want to develop a version of "Controllerism" that would make Moldover proud. When I take away my hands, the drums just repeat the same boring phrase... so I'm still intimately involved in my own music... hands on
Actually I'm getting fascinating results using the old methods and these new tools, like Ableton.
There is great fun in just playing stuff live... session view in Ableton is lots of fun! Just trying to make Zebra shuck and jive with Ableton better.
