When did you last try? I haven't had any problems (and therefore need for troubleshooting) at all in years  Not since Windows 7 anyway, and as far as I can recall even Vista was a pretty smooth ride for me.

But to be honest, I've never tried a Mac so I'm not familiar with the experience on that platform.
I borrowed a Macbook Pro a couple of years ago.. and nearly threw it out of a window.

I think largely in part because I'm completely used to working with Windows based computers.. the Apple OSX tries to do a lot of stuff for you it seems. That and the pathing is completely different.. even the menu options are setup differently..

It was a frustrating experience trying to navigate and set it up.. because it seemed to be setup to try do a lot of stuff for me..

So perhaps lofty is experiencing the same scenario in reverse? Windows generally has tended to be more hands on..

That said I have done no tweaking or other major setup (outside of disabling the virtual memory/page file and disabling UAC) to Windows 7 and it runs for months without rebooting.. months. It seems they got their ducks in a row with this OS compared to previous generations of Windows.

Not a love/hate post.. I'd like to keep this thread civil and halfway mature.. so I hope the above isn't taken as an attack either way.

I had the same experience helping my folks set up routers and wifi on their Windows machines, nothing where it "logically" should be, different names for the same actions. I guess that's the ugly ground floor of any OS, getting it to the point where it becomes transparent.

It sounds so far that Windows 7 is stable, but isn't it a bit long in the tooth? I'd hate to jump onto another listing ship...

P'S. To all you picture posting pundits out there, I rocked a few c64s well into the 90's, thank you! And STILL sold them on ebay for more than I paid twenty five years later. Try THAT with a pc of any kind!

ppffft. My Altair 800 pwns your c64....so there! :x

Worms was definitely better on the Amiga.

I think this thread is similar to the "who uses presets" thread. The same people are going to say, "No way, man! I'm so hardcore 1337, I have a pimped out Redhat 9 distro compiled specifically for my Asus mobo. I don't even use commercial drivers. I machine code my own! I'm hardcore! Sure, it takes several days of coding, but it's SO rewarding to do every mundane task yourself instead of just getting down to making music."

I am not even sure this is entirely possible, since the Core2 series machine are executing the same binary code.

to the op, considering your experience I would stick with Mac. I've been down both roads and they both have their pros and cons.

Yeah, like most things, dewdman42. Where did you end up?

So no one is maintaining dual OS systems out there? Huh! I guess it's like what Woody Allen said about kids with two moms. "Most people barely survive one!"

And it's the high entry price of Macs that's giving me pause, not the UI, even the resale value is crazy. But would a lower priced PC with almost no resale be a better option? Ah, the ability to argue oneself to a standstill...

Well I got tired of reinstalling windows once a year due to registry bloat. I actually really love OSX and have no intention of leaving it anytime soon. my laptop and DAW machines are both macs.

That being said, I am building a windows pc to use for gigging, mainly because Forte is the best app to use for that. If they had something like that on mac I'd gladly stay on mac, but in this case I have more options for building a pc that has a form factor I like for gigging, etc..so I'm cool with it..... But other than that I much rather be in osx. But that's just me.

Honestly there are tons and pros and cons on both sides and people have their fav. You can be totally productive on either one and system crashes are really rare anymore on either platform also.

If you're used to one, you will go to the other platform and have some adjustments to make.

PC's can be a bit more affordable, but right now you can find refurbished 8 core macs for quite a reasonable price, so don't write them off on that alone. But its true you can spend the same money now and have a faster windows machine...so there is always that. But if you have pro tools files and just familiar with the mac, I think its wise to stick with it...unless there is a very compelling reason to change.

looks like mainstream support for Win7 is Jan 2015

I'm planning on keeping it beyond then, unless things get flaky with security patching... trying to skip Windows8 in the hopes that MS comes back to their senses and removes the tablet feel from win8 and just improves on the flow they had in Win7.

In your situation.. yeah.. if you don't want to relearn (which actually wouldn't be THAT difficult) and you have a long standing home in the Mac realm.. might be nice to stay there?

On the other hand.. for half the price of a new Mac Pro you can get an equally stacked Windows machine... toss up.

Have you tried using bootcamp ? I mean maybe now you can just play with Windows and see if you are OK with using it daily before possibly switching to it (and possibly discovering you don't like it as much) ??
