I think if you continue posting demos you will definitely kill my mind :)

i don't have any sampler yet (ecept the one in live and new sonic arts nuance)

i don't like kontakt, it's (in my opinion) more for pure composers not for "sound designers" (me ..) but maybe i'm wrong

i don't know what to choose wetween halion & machfive ....
Sorry :) - maybe you don't need a sampler then, but maybe you need MachFive or Halion 5. I still love Kontakt and have been making sounds with it for ages but it's just a sophisticated sample player.
These new monsters are like all in one hybrid killer machines...

2 multisampled Thai Gongs with 8x Round Robin and 4 velocity layers (from one of my Alchemy Banks) mixed with the FM engine (running through a tuned combfilter with 100& feedback), filter distortion modulated by a random module. Using the onboard compressor which can produce pretty evil sounds too.

MachFive's modulation system is pretty slick, comparable to Alchemy with almost limitless cross-modulation-possibilities and all desirable modulation sources.

Wow Simon! Great stuff as always. I'm sure there are quite a few people who are really glad that you are making sounds with (and for) Mach 5. And also Halion 5 by the way. Two very exciting sampler/synth/FX machines.

Cheers,
Ben

Thank's Ben - yeah first I checked out Halion 5 and then as a comparison I got into Mach 5 - it's very exciting and interesting to explore both these monsters and I wouldn't know which one to favour. So I will just support both instruments in the future.

I love to hear that Simon. I've enjoyed using Mach Five for a year or so and have just ordered Halion 5, and I'm feeling very psyched for it, especially so now that I hear you praising both for their excellent sound design capabilities. As others have mentioned, it's unfortunate that there are very few sound banks for Mach Five (there is an outstanding, and exhaustive, bank for prepared piano that IRCAM published) and I'm sure you will come up with some very interesting ideas for them.

the filters in Machfive sound very good to me...when I had the UVI vintage legends the filters were a real asset - although it was surprisingly heavy on CPU as they are oversampled...

Agreed, both on the filters and the CPU :) - what's great in MachFive is that you set every oscillator to several unison voices and can apply unison modulation to almost every parameter available. This eats up voices like crazy of course and puts some heavy strain on the CPU but it sounds incredible. Tried it today on samples in granular and sampler mode and got some very thick and amazingly rich textures out of it, also using just the synth and FM engine.

Yeah, then you also have the duo infernale at your fingertips now :) - you'll love Halion 5 for it's granular engine for sure!

Nice sounds in there! I wish Halion had FM too. But I think they will add it in the future to complete its sonic possibilities.

Experimenting with MachFive's wavetable synth, importing a single cycle waveform from a cello pizz sample (just drag and drop any wav into the wavetable synth, can be single cycle or long wavs), then modulating the symmetry parameter with a temposynced step sequencer. modulation depth assigned to the Modwheel which is automated in the demo - a hybrid filter with high resonance is also active, modulated by the same step sequencer. An overdrive FX module totally trashs the sound.

Testing the organ engine here, sound pretty smooth - all FX are MachFive as well:

Awesome thread. Maybe I'll participate (it has certainly motivated me to experiment a little) if I find some time this week.

Another experiment:

2 granular oscillators playing some french horn derivatives mixed with a FM and an analog synth, a UVinyl module on an aux send run through a Cathedral IR adds some dirt. Lot's of filtering and autopanning going on. MachFive is a true MONSTER...

More granular experiments:
Setting the Unison Voices of a layer to 7 (in "Tree" view - layer inspector), then adding a cello col legno sample from one of my Banks, then modulating the Grain Position with unison modulation (and the pan) so that the 7 grain streams all play simultaneously at different points in the sample - like this similar textures to the Padshop Pro/HALion 5 engine can be achieved. The Modwheel adds unison modulation to the pitch so that the grainstreams are spread out over 3 octaves with the wheel fully up.

The Density parameter was modulated in the demo, there is some LFO-filtering going on, some filter drive added, onboard compressor and Spark Reverb.

Orchestral experiment:
An orchestral snippet from my composition Windschatten which was premiered last May, recorded during the second rehearsal in a dry rehearsal studio with all the intonation problems that occur during a second rehearsal.

I imported that snippet into MachFive 3, using IRCAM stretch and IRCAM granular mode at the same time in two layers, the time factor of both layers is identical, the granular engine creates some sample position fluctuation as the layer is set to 3 voices unison and the sample position is modulated with unison modulation.

I then played the original pitch and an octave below with an offset of a second so that the retriggered LFOs modulating the filters create an offset in the filter sweeps and the drive modulation of one of the filters. Some delay and reverb from MachFive was added, both layers have LFO-filtering going on (notch for the granular layer, a hybrid filter for the stretched layer).

The demo begins with the original, unprocessed snippet for comparison.
