That said, a major part of the 303 acid sound is down to the sequencer.
So banging a few notes into a piano roll on Sylenth may come up short.
I *might* be able to identify that wasnt a 303, but I'd never know if ABL or Phoscyon was used.

But anyway who gives a damn. It's acid FFS, not jazz.

Never understood that kind of snobbery. Good music is good music. If you're thinking "the music is OK but this would be better if it were a real 303" then the music isn't capturing your imagination. Mediocre music made on classic equipment isn't worth bothering with. You should hear what people can do with Synth1

oh ok. i was a bit confused by that statement myself. i mean sure that would apply 10 years ago when vsti were in there infancy but with today's 'arguably' realistic sounding vst/au/rack extension units its not nearly as strong an argument over using those vs using a real tb303 and sequencer. sure, the tb303 with sequencer will sound more authentic (does it matter if i use a pianoroll vs writing notes in the sequencer/matrix? is one better then the other? tips?) but a music listener wont care how its created if its a good song?

yes it matters, the good emulations have a built-in sequencer for a reason
the built-in sequencer is highly limited in the way it fires notes, there are certain rules, which you don't have to know about but they are there all the time
if you use a piano-roll, it is very likely to break those rules, which would result in a weird sounding pattern, and anyone who is familiar with 303s will know that there's something weird about your "303 line"

so if you want to stick to the 303 sound - use the built-in sequencer (plus, it's much more fun that way, and that's what it's all about)

i agree with the pianoroll. it just doesnt sound realistic. so i spent this morning learning how to use the phoscyon sequnecer. it took a bit of understanding but now i know its done. if people want to make acid, they should at least learn how to use a 303 sequencer. its like night and day vs a piano roll.
