Anyway, is there something special about that ancient Korg thingy? I had never heard of it before, but maybe I have heard it before, without knowing it

oh - these are the questions why from every synth-enthusiasm...Every Stringsynthesizer has ist own charme and character and they all sounds different. I own an old Crumar Multiman and a Logan since many years and would never sell them. They are a little basic and of course, doesn´t sound like real strings - but thats the reason why. It´s more than a hype - it´s real vintage. The Korg Delta was used - as far as I know - from Synthlegends like Kitaro. He made his unique sounds of it.
The Nabla is a really impressive and good emulation from the original. It´s fun to play and fiddle with and so many thanks to "Full Bucket". A really good gem.

What exactly does that refer to?Numanoid wrote:fluffy_little_something wrote:Bot to me all those string machines sound basically the same, anyway. The worst thing about them is that they sound nothing like real strings, despite the name...![]()

I am just not interested in that ancient sound, I would not know how to use it in modern music without sounding outdated (I mean really outdated, unlike with 80's sounds which I like a lot). Ideally a string machine would emulate the real string sound as the name implies.

Please DO NOT make time-outs on your server. I cannot even download it with my 10 kbps connection because the download always terminates around 620 kb and cannot be resumed...

Gee, when will they upgrade your connection? This is a tiny download by modern standards...Tricky-Loops wrote:Please DO NOT make time-outs on your server. I cannot even download it with my 10 kbps connection because the download always terminates around 620 kb and cannot be resumed...

Many 80's acts like Ultravox and New Order relied on String Machines from the '70'sfluffy_little_something wrote:unlike with 80's sounds which I like a lot
Like the 303 which was meant to sound like a bass guitarist, the String Machines of the 70's has earned their place on the music palette as a distinct sound.
And something that is timeless can never sound outdated

Never liked either of those bands...
I guess I simply have a different attitude towards synths than most people on this board. Not the first time I noticed that in the course of such conversations...
Anyway, back to topic

The connection speed limitation is until March 25th because I've already used my 4 GB max. download limit, and instead of braking it down to the mentioned (max.) 64 kbit my enemy Telekom brakes it down to less than 32 kbps...fluffy_little_something wrote:Gee, when will they upgrade your connection? Why, if you find vintage string synths dated and unusable, why do you even want to discuss the topic?fluffy_little_something wrote:Anyway, back to topic

Well, it is not only a string machine, it also has a synth half and one can turn the string crap offNumanoid wrote:Why, if you find vintage string synths dated and unusable, why do you even want to discuss the topic?fluffy_little_something wrote:Anyway, back to topic

BTW, Prince must be the quintessential 80's artist right?
He too used vintage string machines to get his 80's sound like 1999: http://www.musicradar.com/news/tech/the ... 06114/16/1
Duran Duran used the Arp Quadra, and also the Crumar Performer.

The basic tone of most String Ensembles is usually not very spectacular. It's the Ensemble/Chorus FX and maybe also an additional Phaser (like the famous Small Stone which is available as software as e.g. "Big Rock") that are big part of the "Magic".
I was one of the beta testers for Xils Lab V+ which sounds great IMO but not so great when the Ensemble FX is switched off. V+ could also do nice analog synth choir sounds that could be layered with the Strings.
Also like some of the paraphonic Strings like sounds i could get from my Waldorf Pulse 2. With the corresponing unison modes the sound could be made "bigger" without external FXs.
One of my favorites are the Novachord Kontakt instruments from SonicCouture and hollow sun, especially in combination with a Chorus FX.
There are several analog polysynths that could do nice synth strings like e.g. the free OBXD synth. It could sound even nicer with som FXs like e.g. an Ensemble or Chorus (while some people do see this as "cheating").
Concerning Nabla i have checked it and it is quite interesting but the Strings sound is not really my favorite one which of course is a matter of taste. Have also tried to use an external Ensemble and a Phaser FX (Arts Acoustic Big Rock) with it.
