Thanks for this SGA :tu:

Post

Wow. :o This is just great. As another poster mentioned, this really imparts that nice saturation you can't get with other methods. Especially on percussive or punchy material, like bass, guitar, and drums, this works wonders. Very reasonable CPU use too. Thanks for making this free.

Thanks for answering my questions, SGA. I hope I can find some time in the near future to take a closer look.

Sorry, but this is a bit vague. So my next question would be, if this is at least built upon anything existing (or is it comparable to something), or are the tube preamps of own design?

I don't think that you would infringe anything except for the GUI design maybe (wouldn't one fader and one EQ row be enough for both stereo and mono usage?). Then again, this plugin is multi mono capable.

Which brings me to the next question if this plugin introduces any cross talk in stereo / multi-mono mode.

SGA wrote:Regarding the POP EQ. We found a scan of the '68 mixer manual where it says:
"Bass control 5 x 2 dB lift and cut. Half lift/cut at 500 Hz."
"Treble control 5 x 2 dB lift and cut. Half treble cut at 2.5 kHz. Treble lift peaked at 5kHz."
Taking into account tolerances of the actual, physical, components, 2.5 kHz can easily become 3 kHz. We also liked 3 kHz control marginally better than 2.5 kHz.
Hm... from the Altec I'm used to 3kHz, and from the Neve 1081 clones, I'm used to the 2,7kHz and 3,3khz settings as mid band. I am surprised about the 500Hz however.

Still, shame that the EQ is not stepped in dB boosts/cuts. I like limitations like that.

SGA wrote:Regarding the CLASSIC EQ. Sources, other than "Recording the Beatles", that we came across, indicate that 10 kHz is the corner frequency, rather than mid-point frequency. Although you cannot trust everything you read on the internet, we decided to go with the concencus. This, and a chosen Q, resulted in 7 kHz mid-point frequency. Q factor was tweaked to get smooth EQ curves.
Is the 500Hz Corner or Center Frequency?

Interesting - not many companies do this.
You should mention that in the circuit diagram in the manual. Or maybe do an upgrade of the plugin where you can switch the VU position post Input Gain/Pre-EQ if desired, additional to post Output Gain.

The preamp model is based on the original 47 preamp, which was used in recording "Revolution". The same preamp was used in the last tube incarnation of the console. Make sense?

We did not model crosstalk.
Compyfox wrote:Is the 500Hz Corner or Center Frequency?
500 Hz in the low shelf is the center (i.e. half lift/cut) frequency.

We do state something like that in the "VU Meters" section of the manual. Maybe a bit more clarification is in order.

sound like a police questioning, interrogation :D

Yes - so your concept is based upon the .47 "preamp" (EMI/Chandler Ltd) which is (also) the main heart of the .51 console. Interesting.

Also interesting - thanks.

Thank you.

Albeit a technical one, and very interesting at that as well.

Looks like the "Abbey Road" brand got a bit of competition recently. Which was about time as well. I'll keep an eye on this plugin, maybe a mkII will be a future release as well (with more features). You'll never know.

Might be my screwy system, but on Mac OSX 10.8 I get .dmg not recognised after download.... :(

Post

We will look into that. Caveat ... our machine running OS X 10.8.5 is really wonky.

Hey Compyfox....

Just use the plugin !

It sounds great...

That's enough evidence right there
No auto tune...

For "normal" users - maybe.
For AE's and technicians that look at bit deeper - it's a whole different story.

YMMV.

I'm with you on this, but I also appreciate Compyfox asking the in-depth questions of SGA--and SGA answering them as quickly as they did!

Wow,

can't wait to try this. I already know that this has to be great, since I'm a big fan of your oldschool Fender style Ace Amp. So, thanks in advance!

I am incredibly stoked about this! Thanks SGA for this plugin and thanks for the detailed response to the questions above. Nice to see that some though was put into making this plugin consistent with the original hardware while taking into consideration variation in the components' response in the real world.

Just cascaded two instances of Code Red and plugged my Variax in set on Casino. Incredible emulation of Lennon's tone on Revolution! I may actually have an application for this sound. :-)
