InLight-Tone wrote:I barely check in here anymore. I've KVR more about technology than about actually writing and composing music which is my interest. We are way beyond adequate as far as gear choices and computer technology to produce stunning music, but in my mind, the people producing music fall short on actual music theory/composition, the language of music, and to compensate resort to producing trippy sounds and obsessing over filters and cucuits instead which in the end is pretty boring...
That sounds a lot more like Geaslutz than KVR to me, and I've been a member of both for ~10 years. The music theory subforum here has some very educated people who are always willing to discuss/debate theory/composition, and the music cafe has a wide variety of excellent music in many genres written by people of all skill levels. GS, on the other hand, is focused far more on gear, analog-snobbery, and generally has many more closed-minded folks, most of whom seem to just collect gear, make trippy drones that go nowhere, and complain about the modern state of music.

I've never had any desire to leave. This place is home for me, as sad as that may sound.
Incomplete list of my gear: 1/8" audio input jack.

It could have been worse for sure. :)
Whoever wants music instead of noise, joy instead of pleasure, soul instead of gold, creative work instead of business, passion instead of foolery, finds no home in this trivial world of ours.

I've never tried to leave. I guess there have been a few times when I went a month or so without posting but it wasn't because I decided not to post, I just didn't have much to say.

KVR was the first forum I was ever active in. After years of lurking on other forums, I just feel comfortable here (and on the Muffwiggler forum, to some extent).

It seems that some feel compelled to post (I guess, the definition of a compulsive behavior). I may have felt that way at one point (you don't get this close to 10,000 posts as a passive participant) but over the years, I started to feel compelled not to post unless I had something of substance to say. Not sure when that started... but judging by this post, that feeling must be fading. :hihi:

Me too, Ive been hanging out here literally since day one.
I remember when it came into being :D

I was a total n00b then so hid in the background watching the big boys

I got into making computer music about a year before VST was introduced.

I was using Musicmaker,TS404 and Hammerhead on my Girlfriends 90Khz computer as I didnt own my own yet. And it was a German Win OS so I learned my way around by intuition not being a German speaker back then!

This place is my first home and I shun membership on all other similar forums

"How many times have you tried to leave KVR?"
:) This title assumes that it's a bad habit browsing KVR ... it's like someone ask you how many times have you tried quit smoking? :)

Personally I have found many interesting and valuable stuff here, eg.:
-information about super sounding freeware softwares,
-interesting production techniques
-others music
-youtube music links
-my fav. developers forums
-plugin bugs descriptions
-and of course second hand buying/selling

Yeah cant argue with you....the forum needs a proper update as it is stuck in 2005
live 11 / Arturia collection / many Softube plug ins / thats it

How do you think your life should be to make it less compulsive disorder'ish, if that is a target for you

Is quitting KVR the only thing?
Nah, I guess the target is to make it make sense in some way or the other. If it was compulsive, it would make sense, e.g. be an explanation. But I just don't know if it is it. It is only when I think it takes time from making music or my job I get kind of worried and then I need a deeper explanation than just doing it for the sake of doing it. Especially if I end up in more flame wars than interesting discussions. Maybe it is just cool that you can be in touch with other people around the world any time a day. That there actually are real people behind all these lines of text. ...hm...not even sure I am making sense right now...maybe I should just surrender to the absurdity of life..but..need more inputs..plz keep them coming.

Well, I've actually left for periods for being tired of some of this. Now I manage it by having an extensive foe list which means that when I read the threads a large number of people are blocked. That doesn't mean that I don't read what they write, it just means that I have to click once for each post. I've found this to be a very effective way of minimizing how many flame wars that I engage in. I don't click on most posts, but I do click on some.

It takes very little to get on my foe list. Say something stupid in a thread, and I put you on it. Have fewer than ten posts and start one of those dumb ass popularity threads, you're on the foe list. Engage in blatant logical fallacy, you're on that list. Then the next time that I see your post, maybe I'll look at it if I'm not too busy, if it's stupid again, then I build a stronger "don't bother" memory for that poster.

Actually, one feature I'd really like to see is rule based blocking. For example, block all posters with fewer than 25 posts. That would be awesome. I know some people will find all of this distasteful, but that's what makes it work. If everyone did it, it would be less effective. Since most people don't like blocking others, it works quite well.

The positive side of this is that the posts from people whom I really enjoy engaging with stand out from the noise and reading long threads becomes more enjoyable.

If you don't like what I post, either my sense of humor, or my opinions on anything and everything, then I would really encourage you to add me to your foe list. There's a good chance that if you don't like I what I write, the feeling is mutual and you're already on mine.

Then, if we're on each others foe list, there's much less chance for conflict when we disagree, we'll just read past each other. It's like two conversations are happening in the same room and neither side can hear the other side.

Another technique that has helped me to manage this is that I'll often respond with a strong opinion and then right before I submit, if I think that it's too many words, e.g., this post would normally be too many, I just save the thought on one of my blogs in a draft and don't post. I've found that over time this has lead to several interesting blog posts that do me more good on my blogs than they do here.

In short, I've really eliminated my desire to leave by managing what and how I contribute.

tl; dr: I make KVR more pleasant for me by blocking many and by keeping controversial content to myself instead of sharing it here.

Tried that foe thing too, didn't work for me. I guess i like a bit of drama every now and then. :) Also sorta feels like closing your eyes and ears, and singing lalalaaa instead of facing reality. Oh, and i hope i didn't make it on your foe list despite our occasional opinion clashes here.

Yes, I think a lot of people feel that way. In a sense, that's really compulsion. Where it's most effective is when I see a thread that's already long and controversial, I end up not reading much of it. If you think about it, it's not much different from not reading all of the threads, it's just a different dimension of filtering.

But, you do have to get used to seeing big swathes of white as you're reading threads. Personally, I find it healthy to be comfortable with "missing out" on some of the conversation. Needing to read every post is, in a way, similar to hoarding.

Oh, and I still get a bit of drama now and then, it follows me around it seems. I'm just never going to change being strongly opinionated and a touch insensitive, so it's probably better for everyone that I don't let a bunch of you get under my skin.
