Yep , that's what I think too . I hated when U2 released " Fly " MTV video I so hated that song .......at 1st then I realized what a great album was made Achtung . I don't own any other U2 albums prior to that one , but I did like alot of there radio hits prior to that album . I love the BASS guitar sound in Achtung .zerocrossing wrote:I really liked where they were going for Achtung Baby and Zooropa but then I felt like most everything they've done since is just rehashing their old stuff. Other than a few stand out hits it all feels like they're going through the motions but have no real passion for it any more.
What is your favourite U2 album?

October, War, and Unforgettable Fire (my vote) were my three favs. Nothing they've released since the Joshua Tree has appealed to me at all.

Achtung Baby. Great album that showed a band that dared to take a different and more experimental approach to their music. Some songs on that album still give me goosebumps.

Hmm... Can't say I like U2. But their early celtic rock stuff was okay.

I'd go with 'Rattle & Hum.' Second would be 'Joshua Tree.' R&H was more or less a roots album, and I share many of the same roots as those guys, so.... I think they jumped the shark after 'Achtung Baby,' though.

Unforgettable Fire is one of the greatest albums of all time. Unbelievable intensity, mysticism, failed experiments, grace, tragedy, pride, beauty, awe. Got it when it came out, we were visiting my grandmother, and I listened to it on her crappy stereo with crappy headphones and was transfixed. I love every single second of it. An impressionist painting set to music.

TUF was quite a departure from their earlier albums, as Brian Eno (and Daniel Lanois) was brought in as producers taking over after Steve Lillywhite
Tracks like Promenade and (especially) 4th of July goes to showcase that with an ambient approach

You know, the more I think about it, yeah, this album trumps October for my favorite. Vote changed.ariston wrote:Unforgettable Fire is one of the greatest albums of all time. I think Pop can be seen as an end of a trilogy, in the sense that:
New Wave: Boy October War
Roots: TUF TJT R&M
Glam: AB, Zooropa, Pop

Maybe. But I'll have to cheat and say their first 3 with MANY honorable mentions including "pop" which everyone hated.Numanoid wrote:(and for the haters, what is their worst effort?)
My favourite is October
Oh and to piss the haters off even more? "Rattle and Hum" was f**king fantastic (still watch it when I get a chance)

saw them on tour supporting October in the spring of 82 : one of the top three shows I've ever seen
I'll never forget the energy they brought that night
with regard to listening to them these days - a little goes a long way

Boy!
Me my Walkman and 'Boy' dancing through the streets whilst on tour in Germany in the early eighties. Everything was changing, all kinds of new music coming out and U2 were part of that breath of fresh air. Young, brash and exciting. Heady times... I'm glad I was there.
