Hello,

I may have found an answer to this - increasing the buffer sample size from 2048 to 4096 appears to have greatly shrunk this problem when it does occur.

I have some more recording to do tomorrow so might bump it up again to 8192 to see if it improves further and doesn't introduce any other problems.

That may work for playback; but isn't there a noticeable latency on recording; or does Tracktion compensate for higher playback latencies by "advancing" it's recording time?

You can use the loopback latency detection feature to detect audio i/o latency, and Tracktion will compensate. I don't know exactly *where* it compensates.

My guess is that it programmatically delays the playback of the existing tracks, click track, etc., to compensate for the recording latency.

It's still a bit early in the day for me to play around with but I'll be back here with an update once I know if it has improved further.

To be honest, I have a feeling something like this was happening with a USB stereo recording I once did, so it's quite likely my computer is the problem and not the mixer or Tracktion. In fact, I had to change the playback setting from the lowest latency to the second-lowest setting because I was starting to get crackling on playback - whereas my lower spec'd laptop does not have a problem. So I'd say this poor old thing just has too much expected of it, although it's no slouch - i5 2500k with 8gb RAM!

I recorded with an Asio buffer of 8192 samples today, and I'm certain that any latency discrepancies between my tracks have now been diminished as much as possible.

I'll be keeping an eye on things as time goes on. If this has solved my problem then that suits me just fine!

You should try to track or record at the highest sample rate possible considering if you have the hard drive space because the bigger the sample rate the bigger the file, but in a home studio I see no reason of going higher than 4800Hz witch is not 9600hz but its good enough and 4800HZ give you more cpc for recording and plugins than 4400HZ. Also I will choose the smallest buffer size as possible. Try between 512 & 1152 buffer size you should find a setting that bring no trouble between 512 & 1152. Remember it is common to track and record at a lower buffer size and then mix at a higher buffer sizer to get more plugins and headroom in a project.

I can't use the lower buffer sample sizes, that's apparently what's been causing latency discrepancies between individual tracks recorded simultaneously - on this computer anyway. I've tried everything between 1024 and now 8192 samples, with 8192 samples being what I'm using now.

I'm also recording at 48khz, 24bit, primarily because I don't really see the need to go any higher. I do have plenty of drive space to spare though, so if I thought it was necessary to go higher I would.

I think it is a behringer A to D conversion conflict because I had a similar issue in Tracktion with the Usb Q520. It would not set to normal latencies of my 4 other audio interfaces. So I could never use in with ASIO-4all it would reset all of my interfaces active it would instantly deactivated the behringer interface I think the conflict was do to the Usb Q520, is also a stand alone mixer making a problem a cure doing the A to D conversion. I could be wrong but this what I think from my observations.

Hi David and all.

I came in to work this morning wondering how to describe the problems I was having last night and how to ask for advice, and then I found your thread. Thank heavens for Google ! I will still state my problem anyway for completeness:

I recorded my band last Friday night. 16 tracks (all mic inputs except bass is a DI) on an XR18 into my new ACER laptop using Tracktion T6. Using nice template I had created with all inputs and outputs set properly. First set recorded no problems. Stopped recording. Listened to recording played back through XR18 - sounded fine. Moved cursor back to end of recording. Had a break.

Came back after break to record Set 2. Pushed Record button figuring I could just keep right on recording where I left off. Nothing. No recording. After a few minutes, gave up and shut down Tracktion. (This is not the problem I'm asking about, but if you know what I did wrong here, it would be good !) Re-started Tracktion and recorded Set 2 on a separate edit. Didn't playback Set 2 to check it.

Last night, played back Set 1 and had a play getting the mix sounding great. Then, went to Set 2.

The Problem:
Exact problem you described in this thread happened to me. Tracks all out of sync. All the tracks were simultaneously recorded, so I assume latency does not come into it. What's going on ? First Set great, 2nd Set all over the shop. Have you discovered the root cause of the problem ?

Hi John, I've quoted the solution I came up with below. To change the Asio buffer you need to open the XR18 control panel (on my Windows computer I click the little '18' icon in the taskbar), and change it in there. Once you change the buffer you'll need to go to Settings and 'reset' the audio device in Tracktion for it to update. Then, re-detect your channel latency as increasing this buffer also increases the latency.

Hi David - thanks for the prompt reply.

I'm sorry - I interpreted your 4x buffer size increase idea as reducing the problem "as much as possible" - in other words, it had not cured the problem.

Please help me understand: does this mean that EVERY recording I make with my XR18 into Tracktion T6 will have all the tracks slightly out of sync, it's just that some recordings will be milliseconds out and practically indiscernible (like my Set 1) and others will have tracks that may be half a beat (250ms) out (like my Set 2) and sound like crap ? And, no obvious reason why ?
If I have this correct, then your bigger buffer "solution" simply forces the XR18 and/or my laptop to make more recordings like Set 1 by reducing the track sync errors down to milliseconds ?
Have you confirmed this by zooming in ? Are all recordings a little out of sync ? I will check my Set 1 tonight and report back. Please bear with me as I am new to DAW editing, and a little disillusioned as I am having these (seemingly extremely rare) issues before I have even started learning about Tracktion !
I can't believe that you and me (and the guy with the Mac !) are the only ones to have experienced this problem.

Anyway, I will increase my buffer size as you described below and let you know how it goes. Then, I will learn how to move my tracks around and align them so I can get back to what I thought I would be doing by now - mixing in Tracktion !

As far as I'm aware, increasing the buffer size completely eliminated the problem with tracks not being recorded in sync, and I have zoomed in on a few occasions for various reasons.

As I'm recording drums (now with about 12 mics), there is some natural latency due to the speed of sound and this appears to be the only thing apparent if I zoom in deep enough to see any differences.

For what it's worth, I have probably recorded hundreds of takes since I last posted in this thread and have had zero issues with things being out of sync.
