I think TSC keep forgetting to release a public beta before a final release version - would save a lot of grief. Works well for the Bitwigs.

You can work around this by pretending the newest version was called a public beta, seeing as it's broadly a meaningless label.aMUSEd wrote:I think TSC keep forgetting to release a public beta before a final release version - would save a lot of grief. Works well for the Bitwigs.

Nope. AFAIK these are the reasons:S-N-S wrote:is there a manual available
1. Cuts cost of product
2. Increases ability to quickly add features (no manual updates needed for each new feature)
3. Product is generally intuitive
4. Mouse-over descriptions are available
You're welcome to express shocked discontent. Some do. The good news is you're far less likely to get a RTFM response here...
Surely there must be consensus by now...

What pough said. Also, if you want help doing something that's not obvious to you, shout here and folk will help. There's various tutorial vids on youtube and the groove website too, to get you going.

Why should someone have to search around youtube or post and wait to be able to use their software?chico.co.uk wrote:What pough said. You're essentially saying that if someone needs to learn something that should be a quick check in the manual, that they should instead waste hours looking around or waiting around for the answer.
If cost cutting is a reason for no manual, then charge for it... or officially sanction that tracktion book.

I can understand people wanting a manual. I disagree, but I still understand it. But I don't get why you think TSC should be obliged to officially sanction the one that Bill's working on. The book exists whether or not TSC officially sanctions it. What does the officially sanctioning do? If they don't officially sanction it, what's going to happen that's so bad?Robert Randolph wrote:If cost cutting is a reason for no manual, then charge for it... or officially sanction that tracktion book.
To me the current situation seems to be the best of both worlds. For people like me, who'd only be tempted to print a manual to shit on it, I don't have to pay for a manual. For others, there's a manual that they can purchase (for as little as $11.99) that will almost certainly be better than one made by a software company. He visits this site. You can ask questions and make requests!
Hell, I bought a copy just to reward him for doing something so awesome. I don't plan to make much use of it. Manuals almost never have answers to the questions I tend to have.
Surely there must be consensus by now...

I don't really see the problem here, tbh. If you want a manual, there is one, buy it.Robert Randolph wrote:Why should someone have to search around youtube or post and wait to be able to use their software?chico.co.uk wrote:What pough said. If you're saying "charge for the manual", just pretend they did, and buy the manual. There is a manual. Someone's charging for it. Off you pop and buy it. Then you've got the manual, you've been charged for it, and everybody's where they want to be.
What am I missing?

The manual's linked off the tracktion website, if you're really worred about it being officially sanctioned before you spend money buying the manual that you want, that you're happy to pay for, as long as it's officially sanctioned.

The issue is that the website royally sucks. I'm definitely not the only person with this opinion either. I actually didn't even realize that this page existed because I avoid the website as much as humanly possible.chico.co.uk wrote:I don't really see the problem here, tbh. Hell, I didn't even click the link the first time I read your post because I didn't want to have to deal with that awful website.
If that information was linked from inside the software, where I suspect most users look, then it would have been a no-brainer.
---
The other major issue is that even the non-official manual (book) is: "This book is 80% complete".
We're on version 7.1 and not only is there no manual, but the third-party substitute isn't even complete. Bill's done a great job, but that isn't exactly a great manual substitute at version 7.

If you go to http://www.tracktion.com there's a link at the top that says "Training", you mouse over it, and there's a section for Manuals.
I'm unclear how that could be made any simpler. Maybe a manuals link right at the top, not "hidden away" under a Training menu? But really, if you want a manual, and don't look for it on the manufacturer's website, for ideological reasons, then the problem isn't really with the manufacturer.
To be frank, this just sounds like complaining for the sake of complaining. There's a manual. It's pretty easy to find. Every manual for every piece of software is out of date as soon as the manufacturer releases a point release. Some point releases of tracktion within weeks of each other.

I didn't say it was difficult to find.
I said I didn't even go there to find it because the website is awful. ("I actually didn't even realize that this page existed because I avoid the website as much as humanly possible.")
I can't access 90% of the info on the website without great difficulty, and even then it's slow as hell to display information. So there's no point for me to go there to look for anything, at all, ever.
As an anecdote, I tried to discuss tracktion in a fairly large musician's IRC room 2 days ago. The reaction was positive after posting some videos... then someone linked tracktion.com. The discussion immediately warped in to how no one (15+ people sharing this sentiment in the chat) would ever buy software from a company with a website that awful. Not single a dissenting opinion. Discussion dead. Potential users gone.

That's a great anecdote. I discussed Tracktion in a room with twenty thousand people who all loved the website. In fact, they all immediately bought it based on how much they liked the website. This definitely happened. This is how people decide whether to buy audio software.Robert Randolph wrote:As an anecdote, I tried to discuss tracktion in a fairly large musician's IRC room 2 days ago. Are we complaining for complaint's sake again? Bill Edstrom's book is "incomplete" only because he's in the process of writing new chapters for every new feature that's being released (the very reason TSC stopped making manuals). It will constantly get revised as the features change. As far as it not being "sanctioned," TSC actually plugged the book in an email they sent. If that's not sanctioning, I don't know what is. Resources are available. Use them if you want. Complaining is futile.
