I use the 'value button' gui option, and love them. They operate kind of like sliders but I don't think they are the 'slider' option.
My concern is that I am not a fan of knobs, at all. So, if I voted YES, I'd be saying that I'd be OK with having to use knobs for some controls, and I would no longer have the ability to decide to use value buttons for those controls.
I think I'm ok with this. I am tempted to vote YES.

Just for info, here is a v9 plug-in showing Sliders and Buttons
>>> http://i.imgur.com/aSjOL46.png
As you can see both sliders and buttons can show the parameter value. In the top two the buttons do not use much (any?) of the Highlights colours so they are shades of grey. The third screenshot (a modified Ozone) shows that they can be tinted. That is done in the Style Editor - changing the Edit > Image definitions. Note that the Switcher controls and Edit panels (such as the A-H presets panel) would change colour too.

The benefit of sliders for me is that I can click at a place on the slider and have the value set there immediately. I can dial things in quicker without needing to type values, and the location of the cursor is more noticeable feedback on where the setting is as I'm adjusting it. If I don't have that, I feel like I'm gonna slow way down.

I use buttons only.
"consisting of knobs, buttons and sliders, and potentially other controls."
Absolutely detest knobs, they're a huge waste of space and a button is a more effective way of displaying the data precisely and imprecisely for quick overlook.

I've voted yes, as long as it made the development easier. Would love to see X - Y Pad instead, especially in Mxxx.

What he said, but I do use Sliders on 95% of the MTotalbundle plugins.pone wrote:....Absolutely detest knobs, they're a huge waste of space and a button is a more effective way of displaying the data precisely and imprecisely for quick overlook.
I have no idea how to vote really, I'm for an GUI upgrade but that doesn't mean that a upgrade would turn out better to me and my personal preferences.... so I'm in freeze mode.

Having carefully reread the initial post, I see I misunderstood it the first time around. You are not proposing to remove sliders altogether, correct? You are just proposing to remove an option, but what effect will that have? I'm wondering if you mean when we set up simple views with MPs, we will not have sliders there? I have never used sliders in that capacity and wasn't even aware it was an possibility (which maybe it's not).
As far as buttons go, I also was confused as to terminology. These are the UI devices used as MP controls? If so, they are poorly named and confusing. To me a button is something you click to turn on or off. Again, one picture = 1000 words, and all that.

I use a touch pad to do much of my musicking. I appreciate the ability to change values directly by dragging horizontally rather than incrementing / decrementing by pushing up and down. For that reason the slider functionality is the best (and buttons are the worst) so I voted to keep it however I think designing the UI to be responsive to the task rather than generic is a good thing.

I feel this needs explaining.
Sliders can be clicked directly on the pixel of your desired value, clicking and dragging them requires horizontal mouse movement. They also get coloured with your Highlight colour.
Buttons are shorter than sliders and clicking on them directly does nothing, clicking and dragging requires vertical movement instead.
All controls allow scroll wheel usage and double clicking for inserting a precise value.
I find it much easier to control the value precisely with vertical mouse movement than horizontal.

As I use a touch-pad I don't have a "Scroll Wheel" which is why I use the sliders.pone wrote: All controls allow scroll wheel usage and double clicking for inserting a precise value.

I find it completely unintuitive to have to drag vertically for a horizontal "Button".
Knobs at least control sensibly however I don't think the breadth of approaches presented with Melda really suits skeuomorphic approaches.

Have a look at the screenshot I posted for examples of each.
As well as the initial-click difference between sliders and buttons, when you drag a button the mouse pointer disappears. So perhaps the discussion should be what behaviour would we like for these "horizontal control objects" Me? I prefer the slider behaviour but I would also like a way to click on the control without changing its value and drag it to a new one.

Personally I like knobs. I don't use sliders much. I Believe its 100% about habit and in software synths there are mostly knobs when tweaking and creating new sounds. So for me the sliders can be skipped. I found in some plugins like Zebra2 I can just use the mouse scroll Wheel when changing a knob value/setting. It is very convenient.
