Can any of you guys get close to this Jupiter 6 patch in Diva?

In fairness, at 11:45 the reviewer does point out he is using a TC Chorus+ and a TC Effects unit to add delay and reverb.... and he reminds viewers that the J6 doesnt have these.Urs wrote:Careful! Youtube-Synth-Video-Problem: There are effects like reverb on the recording. The Jupiter-6 doesn't have reverb or anything. Therefore, not even a hardware Jupiter-6 will sound like what's on this video.

Cool! I haven't watched that far...thetechnobear wrote:In fairness, at 11:45 the reviewer does point out he is using a TC Chorus+ and a TC Effects unit to add delay and reverb.... and he reminds viewers that the J6 doesnt have these.Urs wrote:Careful! I'm a bit pre-occupied here because many videos I came across don't mention effects at all.

Ahh right. Looking into the whole factory patches thing reveals a bit of a process. Apparently you have to play a wav file into the Jupiter. Anyway here is my attempt. I wanted to post this earlier but wasn't at my computer.
Feel free to add the chorus/delay/reverb whatever and see if that makes a difference. I can't quite get the pitch bend on the attack to work properly anyway. It seems like there is something that happens to the pitch of the oscillators right at the beginning. It's not quite there as you can see but I've done this by ear mostly and by looking at the guy's settings.

Oh I forgot to set the accuracy to "Divine" as well...

When starting with a preset on the Jupiter the slider settings may not be in sync with the actual settings, right?nevernamed wrote:and by looking at the guy's settings.

That video does sound like he was using an exciter, giving it more brightness and shimmer than normal.
I don't think the sound is too hard to do in Diva, even though he kept changing the sound over time.
It's the long envelope release time that can kill the cpu, which the sound seems to need.
I still can't find time to drift toward Diva right now though.
Wish I could get that sound though, because it sounds great.

That's right I would say. The slider settings/positions on the Jupiter don't translate directly to Diva always. Takes a bit of experimenting to match it up at times.Chris-S wrote:When starting with a preset on the Jupiter the slider settings may not be in sync with the actual settings, right?nevernamed wrote:and by looking at the guy's settings.

Hi guys,
here's my version for Tyrell N6 of the opening patch.
The problem here is to play like our Japonese friend Ujiie.

Remember that Diva has the "poly2" voice mode option, which can help.mcnoone wrote:It's the long envelope release time that can kill the cpu, which the sound seems to need.

This kinda illustrates one problem with trying to reproduce many synth patches, especially those from recordings, no matter how well known or iconic; what we hear is not often exactly what came out of the synths. They are processed much like any instrument/sound in the studio to suit the situation/mix/song.
EQ, compression, outboard effects, etc. We hear wonderful rich stereo sounds from what were mono synths (like the JP6) which had no on board effects at all. Many with no high pass filter either, which would often be necessary to fit the sound into a real mix.
Synths like the Juno, PolySix, etc had chorus added to, more or less, fill out what was missing in their architectures (one oscillator, etc) compared to their bigger brothers. But chorus, reverb, EQ are still added to a JP8 to enrich the sound. To my ears, unprocessed synths can sound, in recordings, even more unique than those that are.
That's why I think that uhe's addition of good quality effects makes perfect sense.. even with complex synth architectures, despite the "purist" approach. It's not cheating at all. And one of the reasons i love Diva and am looking forward to Zebra 3 and even better on-board effects.

Here's five patches I did trying to get this sound.
It's the attack portamento that's not quite as punchy or brassy.
If you have a good computer, you can raise the amount of voices so you can use more than 3 or 4 note chords. I normally keep those low for less cpu usage.
These are just variations of the same patches.
Hope it gets you closer to that sound.
I've attached the sounds to this post.

Just so you know that's not a pitch bend thing, but the portamento setting which Diva has, or you can try using envelope 2 with some decay, and no sustain, then modulating the pitch a bit using that envelope2. That gives you a bit more control than portamento only.nevernamed wrote:and I can even emulate the pitch bend
