Ive got the answer to all this.. Why not make Bitwig free but ad supported? Every other arranger track could be a banner ad. Also when you open a plugin you have to watch a 30 second advert before it pops up. Team up with Amazon and get Alexa built in too.

Why did no one think of this, its the obvious solution! Thank me later.

That's funny. I surely do not want viagra ads flashing by. I am not doing EDM :!:

Change is good! Be bold, vote now! If you been labeled "dramaqueen" for being against capitalism you're on the right path.

Then you'll just have lots on empty spaces with a message about how the ads fund the project. This gave me more than a chuckle, but the more I think about it... :o Nah.

I love the new slogan;

"2 years is better than 1"

I remember when Bitwig hit the market, as others I suggested to give it a tag of €169. The idea was simple; more customers, more feedback etc.
It was out of the question.
And now the high introduction prize (€289) backfires. Or they must have some kind of financial backup. However, I can't say they made a wise decision. Let's face it; usually an update of a product like this goes for €89-€99. So they will have to depend on a new customers base.
I guess we've all seen it happening before. Nothing new under the sun.
I never make mistakes; I just blame others.

Post

Depends; I'm okay with it If it means they put out more updates and whatnot at a faster rate, but if not then 160€ is a bit over the top.

I'm perfectly fine with this model. I'll buy the upgrade as soon as it comes out. Then I'll enjoy 12 months of free updates. Then I'll wait until so many new features have found their way into Bitwig that I can justify to pay 159 Euro again.

Nicholas Allen (CTO of Bitwig):
If an OS update breaks your build we will backport the fix and make it available or make a version that is usable on that OS available for you.

If they extend this policy to other critical bugs, I really don't see any problem here...

The one big mistake by the Bitwig team is "lack of communication", though. They clearly overestimated the ability of the average user to understand the advantages of this model, and they aren't very clear about certain edge cases. The quote I posted should not be hidden in some facebook comment, but clearly visible on their homepage, or in one of the discussions here on kvr...

One aspect, that I don't like about the model (although it doesn't affect me): It will make collaborations difficult, if 2 users are on slightly different versions of Bitwig, because they aren't constantly staying "up-to-date".
