It's got me thinking how it works... I guess you can have two mice fighting for control at once so you point to the control with your primary mouse (or touchpad) then the nobcontrol, when twizzled, sends a button down and mouse up/down (left/right) commands..?

Seems that the metal knob is touch sensitive, emulating a mouse button press, after you positioned the mouse pointer with your mouse. Dialing the knob will then emulate a vert or hor movement of a mouse. So you'll have to hold your real mouse still in that time. And lift the hand from the metal knob before moving your mouse again.
This might be working for some daw controls that need fine adjustments. On the other hand it will not work good in several plugins, where the mouse pointer is moving away from the knob while adjusting it. By unhanding the metal knob, the pointer will loose focus to the knob and needs to be repositioned for the next dial.

Good points. I guess this really needs to be thought threw to cater for all plugin behaviours; like how some plugin knobs have that annoying tendency to stop moving when you leave the plugins gui whereas others seem to handle that fine.

That Kontrol Master is way too big for something that has to sit alongside a mouse, keyboard etc...imo

It's a shame that the nobcontrol has been built in that manner. Perhaps they could have two models: 1) As it is, for the connoisseur, and, 2) One made from cheaper material. Some shortcut knobs on the top and sides could be fun

Audient ID4 and ID14 have this technology built in. See https://audient.com/products/audio-inte ... /overview/ and scroll (sic) down to ScrollControl. It basically lets you use a big knob on the interface as a scroll wheel when you hove the mouse over an element.

totally agree. Wanted something I could bring anywhere... my only is issue was that the cord confirmed by the company is hardwired into the wooden case... just wary of wires going bad IMA.

This a completely different thing (not universal but mapped to a parameter, not endless encoder)
Can be done with Dopefer USB64 or this too.

Yes, but crappy. You'll have to push the knob down while turning it. It's stepped and doesn't allow fine adjustments. And it makes the mouse pointer move and thus lose the focus of the GUI knob when lifting the encoder.
Never used it, never understood why Novation did not get this better when doing a plugin wrapper already.

Since OP asks for suggestions i might add my 2 cents.

It is possible to load The Midi Expression as a plugin (32+64 bit).You can define the curve and which Channel and CC its sending (smoothing and other things too) and restore each settings in a DAW project if the plugin is loaded.

While Midi needs assignment i already skipped the idea for a endless rotary mouse emulation. Atm for me it doesn't make too much sense (Though i don't know the other mentioned products).

For fast scrolling through a list i use my Logitech G502,it is possible to free the scroll wheel.

I have a Audient ID4 and while it is handy to use the rotary feature there isn't any scrolling customization possible.I could adjust the scroll wheel behavior in the OS but what if i switch back to my mouse?

No, the other knobs run smooth, you can adjust the resolution in the Automap software, so knob movements will be as smooth as the plugin programmer made it.
Just the "Speed Dial" is constructed bad.

As the OP wanted a controller to fine adjust the parameter he is clicking/pointing to, the Nobcontrol seems to be the only one doing that (with the explained drawbacks like interferring with the mouse when touching it. And I think it's overpriced.).
Basically one could build his own by ripping a gamer mouse, connect the vert mouse encoder to a metal knob and connect the left mouse button to a touch sensor circuit.
