(Although if I remember correctly that preset makes a mistake in how it treats the upper band. I think the actual hardware mixes a new, parallel upper band in with the full signal but the preset doesn't. So the preset doesn't give the same kind of phase cancellation at the top end of the spectrum. Not 100% sure about that as it was a year or two ago that I was looking into it.)
This was probably the one I did called something like "80s Style HiFreq Enhancer". It was inspired by an article in Sound on Sound in which the writer explained how to do it using a rather elaborate (and labor intensive) multi-bus configuration. By the way, if there was a mistake in the preset, it's probably because the original article did it that way. :D

You can read that article here:

Really? I mean, mistakes for which the SoS article said do it one way and the preset did it another? It's been ages, but I'm curious as to what those mistakes were. Damn - I now feel compelled to go back and see what happened there, if I can just fine the time to do so. :?

Cruel of jmg8 to just say that and leave you sleepless... :D

Ha ha, ok.
So the crossovers should be 12 but you used 24.
The top (9khz) band should be in addition to the top (3khz) band, not split from it.
The compressor for the 9khz band should have a ratio of 1.5:1 not 2:1.

Wow, that bad, huh? I probably would not have thought of the crossover slope in the first place, but the other two - if the article said to it one way and I completely did it another by mistake, well, that's just embarrassing. In my defense, a) there was nothing to which I could compare the resultant sound and b) by the time I started doing presets, it was well past the demo timeout period and the damn thing was adding noise about once a minute making it almost impossible to maintain concentration.

But, hey, thanks for the pointers nevertheless.

He he. Luckily it's not called Dolby so doesn't really have to sound like it. It sounds good and that's all that matters. Sorry for nitpicking, but you asked for it! He he.

Well, bleeping bloody bleep! There were indeed stupid and obvious errors. I pulled the preset up and took a look. Early on in my MXXX preset creation efforts I was having a lot of problems loosing work - getting confused between active and regular presets and getting confused about where they all should live. The 80s-style preset was one of the first I made. What got submitted was an early attempt but hardly the finished version. I quite expect it's too late to get the existing one replaced with the correct one - damn!

This is one rock I wish I hadn't been curious about what was under. But thanks for pointing out the problem ... um, I guess. :?

Ha ha. I'm only joking with you anyway, it's not a big deal. As i say it sound good so that's all that matters.
