If you use 10gbe on the sever, a suitable 10gbe switch and gbe out to the clinet - well it's possible (as bandwidth per client should end up the same as a normal single master/single slave VEpro over gbe setup).imau wrote: Fri Jul 21, 2017 9:08 am With Gigabit Ethernet connections, can I use samples without latency, even if several computers are reading the same files ?
Issue will be having enough cpu on the server to keep up with all the clients (so probably at least a decent xeon cpu) and also enough bandwidth to storage on the server for that not to be a bottleneck (bus attached flash storage most likely - forget even RAIDed hdds)
short answer - aside from to software issues, having suitable hardware will probably cost so much that you're nowhere near the break even point with 10 clients (makes more sense when you're talking petabyte size storage and 100s of clients) - it'd actually be cheaper to just increase the storage on the clients and store the samples locally (2tb isn't that big in modern terms - 2tb hdds are dirt cheap and attached locally will still outrun even 10gbe for thruput).
