Truly appalling demo :?

SLiC wrote:Funny, I was thinking that this was an underwhelming update for the big 10. There is a lot of 'stuff' there, but I was realty expecting more DAW features rather than new instruments (as fun as that wavetable synth looks, I have Serum, Avenger, Falcon etc), maybe I have just skim read it and there is a lot more I am missing...but I don't see any new 'killer' feature or workflow, just more stuff.
That's pretty unfair. Some workflow changes important for me:
- (!!!) multi-clip editing,
- (!!!) retrospective MIDI record,
- (!!!) high-DPI screens support, themes,
- (!!!) trackpad / mousewheel horizontal & vertical zoom,
- (!!!) automation grid-snapping
- note-chasing,
- grouping of groups,
- Utility goes down to -Inf (!).

Go to the bottom of the page and read through the details. It's telling - and incredibly satisfying for me! -
that Arrangement got the biggest list.

Nope, been through it in mow detail now, definitely very underwhelmed as comparing it directly to BWS (which already does a lot of Lives 'new' stuff|) and will definitely not be 'switching back' from BWS. They really seem to have missed the big stuff people have been requesting for a long time, I am astounded they didn't introduce in clip editing.

This is pretty much it (my personal take in brackets against BWS which I was using to replace LIVE- this is not a BWS V Live dig, I have both, just a note about how the updates fit with someone who has/uses both)

New Devices (for me this would have been the lowest priority for LIVE 10)

• Wavetable Synth (have enough wavetable synths already, but it looks very well done if you don't have serum, avenger etc)
• Echo (have more than enough delays!)
• Drum Buss (drum sounds, have enough and all the physical model drums in BWS are great)
• Pedal (overdrive, yup, its no AMP we got free with BWS)

Updated MAX devices and Max is integrated (be interesting to see how much better/faster than M4L but I still struggle to just program something simple in MAX versus using the BWS modulation system, if however the MAX devices now work as well as native devices there will be an army of cools stuff developed to play with no doubt- not sure if this now classes as 'native' modulation for MAX created LFO etc...)

Capture – pre-record Buffer (maybe useful)

Edit multiple MIDI clips (doesn’t superimpose audio as far as I can tell like proper hybrid Tracks like BWS)

Arrangement View has been optimized (multiple small workflow enhancements, no where near as powerful as BWS linier view or clip view and linier view on the same screen-)

Browser Collections (small but nice, again, no where near as powerful as the pop up browser in BWS)
Rename I/O (standard in most DAWS)
Groups within groups (standard in most DAWS)

New Stuff for Push (not interested)
New Library stuff (not interested)

All in all I just see MAX 'integration' replacing M4L, some workflow tweaks (rather than anything really new) and a few new rack devices.

Live 10 public beta has started, you can get in the cue now.

Just sayin...

I am kind of underwhelmed too, when compared to Bitwig live is still missing VST3 and better routing. Which are essential features for a better workflow or even using all available devices - eg. AutoTune 8 is VST3 only on Windows and it's a hassle getting it to run there.

Yes there are good new features and improvements, but one of the basic things (VST3) in my eyes should be there and needs to come, otherwise Ableton will lose customers i guess.

All major DAWS have this feature in the meantime, I don't understand what the problem is.

Another thing: Still limited to 12 Return/Sends - why?

Lots of lovely stuff in this update, still no sign of MPE support though.
They have my money though, that's for certain!

I read the intro docs, no mention of better MPE support? VST3 support?

Obviously it's much easier to create new features list by giving a synth designing job to 3rd party hands than integrate some useful feats into existing code without breaking anything...

Funny that you mention that. I'm in a big Facebook group of ableton live users and i made a poll back in September asking the community what they wanted in A10.
vST3 support was quite literally at the bottom of the list. The top results being piano roll enhancements, fixing the infamous pitch glitch, etc.

I don't think as many people care about it as you think they do. I mean that respectfully of course. It would be nice to have but I never Even use vst3 honestly. I imagine many are the same.
The post above this is likely bait, viewer discretion is advised.

That was quick, downloading live 10 beta now... :hyper:

On the other side your poll may have not been representative about Ableton Live users overall.

There's also a help topic on their Homepage which is open since ages with that VST3 issue.
And as I stated, there are plugins now which do not release anymore as VST2, so passing on these customers would be not that good of a strategy. But maybe Auto Tune is out of fashion and not used by anyone anymore :)

Same goes for MPE, which should be also a standard feature in every new major DAW version.

@xbitz

You have to join the beta, there is a link in the live 9 beta forum.
When accepted, you'll have a live 10 project where you can get it.

-Cheers

*Sry, this assumes you're already in the beta program with live 9.
Otherwise: https://www.ableton.com/en/beta/ to sign up
if you already have a lic for live that is...
