Getting music into Waveform 9

@ AGreen.. Do I just open the sampler and expect it to play? Or are changes to audio device type etc required, I only ask this as ASIO seems to prevent everything external from playing in TW9. I think perhaps you're correct with the internal routing part though, which I wish was like Reaper as that will do anything it seems.

People commenting on this are making it far too complicated when it's actually very simple. You just need to put a multisampler on a track and then click on the "RECORD" button at the top of the sampler. Then click on the menu at the bottom left ( the three horizontal lines) and select "System output" as the recording source. Now when you click on the record button (the small circle) it will record any output currently playing, be it a web browser or audio player or whatever. It will also simultaneously record anything playing or recording in waveform itself because waveform sends to the outputs too.

The only problem with this is that at the moment I can't seem to find a way to make the sampler record more than 30 seconds of audio. Maybe someone else knows how to change this default as it's a bit limiting. However actually recording outputs is extremely easy in the sampler.

Just tried that vb-audio my friend.. It works, in that it will allow me to play Spotify and TW9 together which I couldn't previously.. However I can't select a Track Destination in TW9 to make it record Spotify audio.. Oh well. Thanks though for the suggestion

I can still do the drag drop file method with online audio, it just means using two programs. Not a huge issue but I wish TW9 could do it alone.

I tested this with Youtube in Firefox before posting. Since that was last night, from memory the process I used was

install the virtual cable (reboot if necessary)
change the default output device for Windows to be the cable device (it'll show in the Playback tab of the control panel dialog that Peter Widdicombe posted above)
open firefox, play youtube video
open waveform
in waveform, set driver type to directsound
in waveform, set input device to the cable device
in waveform, set output device to the regular headphone device
in waveform, create project, create track, set track outputs etc
in waveform, arm track, turn on direct monitoring, start recording

-> voila, youtube audio in waveform.

ASIO is the "best" to use normally, for latency reasons; however ASIO (most versions?) doesn't really like multiple separate interfaces. On a good soundcard, the Windows drivers are normally acceptable.

Just curious - acoustic guitar with microphone, or electric (or acoustic) with pickup? How do you listen to the music while recording?

If you fed your Asus output to speakers as well back into the Tascam as an input (the Asus - does it have a line output as well?); and then fed guitar into the Xenyx interface, you should see both of those as separate inputs into Waveform. You then should be able to record the audio soundtrack AND guitar (or even guitar and a microphone if you like) all on separate channels ?

Or, as I mentioned before; you should be able to see the windows output if the sound card supports the "mix output" as a recordable interface; and Waveform should see the other devices as separate inputs you can select from. Make sure they are connected before you load Waveform, or you can "rescan" in the "settings -> audio devices".

Seems that the simple solution to the larger question here would be for the Tracktion devs to add that "System Output" option to the general track input selector. Then you could record an unlimited audio stream from any internal computer source using a standard audio clip on a Waveform track.

That works great thanks mate, as you say though its a shame only 30 secs is available at a time (it's good for small portions of a song though.) So I will remember that.

I'm using an electric guitar which then goes to > Whammy DT pedal > Line 6 Helix floor effects unit > Xenyx Mixer then into Asus Xonar D2X Sound card.
The Tascam Interface is being sent back today (faulty XLR jack.)

I'm listening to the music directly from Spotify via my PC's 5:1 sound system (set to stereo) I would just have Spotify and Reaper open.. I hit play in Spotify on my chosen tune & hit Record in Reaper whilst playing along. Reaper would record two separate tracks, one guitar and one Spotify Audio track.

The Asus D2X sound card has 1x Line in and 1 Mic in.. The rest are outputs and control for the 5:1 sound system. It also has SPDIF In/Out.

My setup in Reaper was like this > Using the Wave Out Audio system in Reaper and plugging my mixer which has RCA In/Out to the Line-In & Mic-In on the D2X sound card.

Yes I'm doing the drag/drop full file into track method at present which does work fine. Removing the 30 second sampler limit would be better though.

I'll email Tracktion tomorrow regarding these little issues, just to let them know it would be much appreciated.

That's a good point! Other than that, I would have assumed that the limit was just a design decision based on the amount of memory needed to process a sample in the sampler.

I haven't experimented with asio, but make sure you record your guitar on a seperate track to the sampler. The sampler may block the audio path to the outputs due to it being an instrument. It seems to all work fine using windows audio in non-exclusive mode.

Interesting thread, but why not just buy the song, put it into Waveform, and then record the guitar while listening to the song? If you're learning the song, that takes enough time to justify the 99 cents.

Up until around 6 months ago I always bought the songs I liked, I still do buy some. However I now prefer to pay for Spotify and have an Amazon account too with access to streaming music, this gives me access to a far bigger selection of music than I could ever purchase or store. Plus, a lot of the time I just want to perhaps play certain riffs etc in song, so this way I can just download songs, pull the sections I'd like to practice, then set it to loop etc.
