I do not really use that much drum machines nor sequencers, but I do from time to time. So I do not know if they all work according to a certain way. One thing for sure is that the Microtonic drum machine that I use sometimes (as in "Escape of the Hopping Rhinos" in the signature below) works with MIDI triggers. One note and it will start to play. No need to hold that note, to make it a loooong MIDI note. It will simply start. Then like MDrummer there are other notes to make it stop which are also triggers.

I've never heard of this method to play midi loops? What is the advantage of holding a note vs just pressing a note? It seems like a lot more trouble to do that. Is it for stuttering effects?

It means you control the length of the pattern and you can quickly preview a pattern from a keyboard etc.
It's nothing fancy, all pattern based sequencers do this.

This feature would make it even easier and better to work with MDrummer. To play a beat for one bar, you would draw a one-bar MIDI note – as opposed to adding a stop note on the next bar.
I am trying to use MDrummer with Studio One's patterns, and the note-triggers-forever behavior doesn't quite fit with it. It would be great to create a long pattern using the different available beats, and have it only play when a note is held down. As it is, MDrummer keeps playing after the pattern ends – and even if you add a stop note at the beginning of the next measure, MDrummer plays one last hit at the start of the measure.
