Just enough to secure distribution for each subsequent release (I do all my own manufacturing/pressing). Fortunately there are many good distributors for independent products at the moment - much easier to just manufacture your releases yourself - saves time trying to suck up to record companies and minimizes the chances of being ripped off by said record companies.

A friend of mine had a sad story about promotion. A few years ago he had sent a demo to a major record company and gotten no response. He tried again with an expensive, glossy promo pack and still got no response.
Getting cynical at this point, he tried sending a blank cassette and $200 in cash. Shortly afterwards he received a letter saying 'We loved your demo, great potential, we'd like to hear more', etc.

That is sad :(

I reckon as time goes on it'll just get easier and easier for people to promote and market their tracks over the net, and hopefully never have to deal with some sleazy record exec who just wants a flashier car!

Hope this thread does not degenerate in a slash-ball flaming of record companies, because I am also interested in seeing the responses.

vurt, not to worry, the last promotion I got I still regret. Now I have to deal with those foreigners. At least it paid for my studio :D

define worth please, see music is art, it's your self expression...surely all self expression has worth. Myself promoting my music has less to do with money and more to do with saying what's on my mind. I really get a thrill when someone else enjoys my music. But then I've always been a bit outspoken :)
The highest form of knowledge is empathy, for it requires us to suspend our egos and live in another's world. It requires profound, purpose‐larger‐than‐the‐self kind of understanding.

Promotion: maybe a little when the CD is eminent otherwise I'll just enjoy sharing in the kvr-community.
you said eminent :hihi: at least you can spell  . Ironically I get a lot of page hits from the word domain, people searching on domain. But this name came about long before the internet... :D
