Well there are some poor reviews of it as well. Many people say how it doesn't do the originals justice and sounds quite different, since sampling can't capture those types of machines. Generally I think the Reaktor based Eminent or Solina will be more accurate. But the sample based layering could be it's own cool instrument.
...

I've read a lot of things about it and most of it seems pretty favourable. But opinions differ of course.

Most seem to say that it conveys the sounds of the original machines, but also adds a lot more on top. I don't know.

But for 40 bucks I was prepared to take the chance most these reviews were in the ball park. I've not been let down by any other stuff they have done. They make the best sounding VSTs in the game in my book. Mileage may vary.

They keep their prices constant, so unless you are going to take less scrupulous paths then you won't ever get to own their software for this price.

I've absolutely no doubt I will be thrilled and enchanted when I finally get around to firing it all up.

But that's not to say that it doesn't fall flat on its face for others, if they have different taste.

Everything about GForce just does it right for me. From the prices to the support. They are a bit no nonsense. But I appreciate that.

It's a good price. I put off ordering a Behringer 808 for it. But I could only afford to do that because Steinberg pulled the rug out from under me.

It's an interesting time to be a software or hardware developer for sure. Prices can't get much lower for either.

telecode wrote: Wed Mar 04, 2020 1:06 pm Can anyone comment, how does it compare to Arturia VCollectoin and UVI VintageVault?
I own all three of them as well as an original ARP Solina String Ensemble (hardware).
In my ears the GForce VSM still performs best. For me it offers the most organic (vintage/retro) sound of them all.
UVI sounds way too sterile in my ears, the samples are so polished, corrected, denoised and (probably) even (pitch corrected) that all life is sucked out of the original samples.
Arturia Solina V is just nice, but when it comes to virtual modelling I think FXpansion Amber (part of the DCAM Synth Squad) still sounds the most authentic.
Synth Magic also offers several string ensemble libraries which are excellent.
The bottom line is that authentic sampling is simply the best way if you are after a sound close to the original (it's nothing else than recording the original within a production).
That's why I consider the current price of the GForce VSM to be an absolute no-brainer!
Thanks a lot for your input. Just to be sure, you do have UVI String Machines 2 ?

The first iteration I thought was as you described, but I'm a bit surprised by your comment as the few demos I've heard, the v2 sounds were alive and seemed authentic. As I've said this is based on a very small sample so I'll make sure to listen properly to both libraries before buying thanks to you.

I’m surprised with their modeling prowess that they didn’t model it.

Just a shout out for Loomer String, an underrated option in algo land. I use both, often together in the same project.

I like GForce as well and would like to support them in hopes that the Oddity and Minimonsta will get GUI updates for high res screens. It's tough to jump on VSM though when I have Omnisphere with it's nice assortment of String Machine sounds (which I don't use enough!), as well as some really excellent Reaktor ensembles of Solina and Eminent. I think the low price is tickling my GAS and I've been giving in more recently than not. Still deciding...

Have you tried the string ensembles people have made with that? They all sound pretty amazing. I'd say better than the Arturia solina. Then there are a couple free ones from Full Bucket that are pretty good too.
That's just my personal opinion - and just because I own a few old hardware string ensembles (in addition to the Solina there would be also a Roland RS-09 and a Yamaha SK-20) doesn't mean anything. I really mean it. Tastes and demands are so different. My personal perspective is very retro oriented, i.e. I sometimes tend to like an old AKAI or E-MU sample library in an electronic context instead of a new super highly polished terabyte library.
Yes, I own Reaktor but have to admit that I very seldom use any Reaktor ensembles, so no opinion on them. Same is true for the Full Bucket synths I'm not quite warming up with.

Yes, I owned String Machines 1 and upgraded to String Machines 2. I can underline this, the first library can already be called terrible. The newly added samples in Vol. 2 were much better and it was much more fun to work with. Nevertheless GForce VSM has a little more soul for me.

No next/previous buttons for sound sources?

C'mon, just buy it already! It doesn't cost a fortune...

(Kinda slow downloads from their servers, never went above 2MB/s. ~10GB to download.)

Indeed, no next/previous buttons; you click on each layer screen and choose from a list. No SSD here, they take a bit to load.

I'm not at my computer.

Anyone know the location of the stand-alone version on windows?
Installing VSM - PC
There are independent installers for 32 and 64-bit versions of VSM. If you wish to use the
Standalone version you will need to download and install the 32-bit version.
From your account on our website, download the following:
The 32-bit installer for 32-bit systems and the Standalone version.
The 64-bit installer for VST use with 64-bit hosts.
VSM Sound Library installer.
VSM Sound Library 2 installer.
Run the installers, installing the instrument versions you require.
Launch VSM as a Standalone or from within your host (DAW).
Enter your serial number. Load a Patch and play.
Default install locations PC
• Standalone Instrument: C:\Program Files(x86)\GForce\VSM
• 32 bit VST Instrument: C:\Program Files(x86)\VSTPlugins\
• 64 bit VST Instrument:
I ain't seeing the standalone version. Might have to investigate.
This is the same method MJ used when he was working on Anthony Marinelli's Thriller.
