Why? He's making a big decision that will cost him a considerable ammount of $$. Why wouldn't you want a professional system in doing so?
Because people who use that word are usually describing something that is a personal preference as though it were really an objective standard. It's usually how wars start here, too. "This thing is more professional." "That's no good, it's not professional." Some pros use crap stuff because they like the way it sounds. Some amateurs use "pro" gear. It's really quite irrelevent who uses what and whether or not they get paid for it, unless there is some specific sound that you want to borrow.

So I'm strongly recommending that he gets what he wants and not what someone else tells him is "professional."

Like I said, it terms of bang for the buck, I think you get a lot more out of a PC-based system.

But, unforunately, we deal with people who judge you on their perception (however ill-conceived) of your gear.

So, if you are going to lose business by not having Pro-Tools tools system and/or it's is something important to your likely clientele, perhaps this is something that should be taken into account in this imperfect world.

This may be changing anayway, so this point may be less valid than it once was.

In any event, this person does not seem to be in the category. If I were him, I would go the PC route and, IMHO, get a lot more for his $$.

No offence, just one person's view.

On a more serious note. PC's have more plugins available. That's it! There are no differences in power or ease of use - both platforms offer these.
yes right, but it's a fact that pc are more powerful, except if you buy a 3000€ bi G5...(which is not more powerful, but can compete with some of the more powerful pc's)
having both, i can say that both OS are really stable, but i prefer OSX, don't know why..but i love my dell centrino laptop which is really powerful...

I understand pough and agree, but I hope you are not referring to my post, as I claimed 'anything is as professional as you want it to be'. Where professional was used in a different context.

"Pro" is the nut behind the mixer, not always the gear.

Really, it depends on the demands of your clientele. If they demand Pro Tools and a Mac, then go that way. If you're writing music for just yourself, it's hard to beat the PC.

Nope. :) It was probably a response to "most profesional plug ins come in vst AND rtas format," which is almost implying that plugins which don't come in both those formats are somehow "unprofessional." But really, I was referring mainly to so many posts in other threads.

Straight out Mac vs PC. Brazen, old skool flamebait.

Yeah, but also take into account that to anyone outside the immiediate community "pro tools rig" means "computer audio program" in the same way that q-tip means cotton swab-thingy and kleenex means tissue.

People always go "Yeah, sleek here records stuff in pro-tools", and it's really useless to correct them by saying I use cubase...because it's all the same to them...only the product matters.

Go with PC just to piss off people who think Macs are more "Pro" :hihi:

In your lifetime, do you use PC the most often or Mac the most often?

In my experiences, I grew up on PCs since the days of Radio Shack Tandy Computers (Remember them? They suck!! :( ) and IBM (with Wordperfect :D)

My only experience with Mac was during the college years (right before I dropout a second time). I can tell you that Macs are so Pro-Tools friendly. :)

Nonetheless, I'm a PC user because I'm more comfortable with getting my hands dirty with a computer I'm use to and try to fix/improve om my own (read: saving money on repair cost)than having something so self-contained like Mac. 8)

If money wasn't an issue, I'll be using both. :D

you dummies. I am a pro tools certified engineer and clients dont want usually pro tools because of the look, they want Pro Tools because of what it does.

Let me rephrase that.

WORTHWHILE, PAYING clients who have true musical potential to rock the crowd consistently usually pay to use Pro Tools because they listen to the radio, any CD, any movie, any DVD and they hear what it can do.

Furthermore, they have SEEN engineers do AMAZING shit with Pro Tools that no other system can do as easily. They also HEARD the results and trust me, if you used a Pro Tools system well(key word being WELL) then you would know exactly what i am talking about.

I feel for you forum junkies, i used to have Pro Tools envy too, until I made a phat mix with it.

Seasons change, guys. Come back to reality.

And if, you do get a client who just wants to "see" Pro Tools and not know what it does then consider the following:

1) These types of clients can be tricked into thinking ANYTHING about your gear-just give them the gear talk and convince them you are a "world class pro engineer" and they will go back to playing and you, recording.

2)They most likely dont have any money due to the fact that they have done no research and therefore sell no albulms and/or rock no/extremely small crowds, so they dont need Pro Tools anyway, cause they sound like shit and dont need heavy editing, because it wont help.

3)Dont take clients who dont understnd studio ethics or the first thing about recording equipment-It's much more of a hassle. If you really must take these ignorant morons as your bread and butter, then at least let them know a little bit about the bells and whistles of gear, how it works, why pro tools etc. I suggest charging for the info too, like a lawyer or a mechanic who gives you a repair estimate.

Ok and finally, I hate to say this awful truth, but PCS ARE FASTER THAN MACS. PC/OPTERON SYSTEMS CAN NOW HOLD UP TO 4 CPUS ON ONE MOTHERBOARD WITH OVER 16 GBS OR RAM AND 16 TERABYTES OF VIRTUAL MEMORY. LATER THIS YEAR PCS WILL BE COMING OUT WITH "DUAL CORE " CHIPS THAT CONTAIN 2 CPU PROCESSORS ON ONE CHIP! ADD FOUR OF THOSE ON A MOTHER BOARD AND YOU HAVE THE POWER OF 8 CPUS, PLUS OVER 16 GIGABYTES OF RAM (4 GIGS FOR EACH CHIP) AND OVER 16 TERABYTES OF VIRTUAL MEMORY. ADD TO THAT DUAL 74 GB "RAPTOR" DRIVE WHICH DOES 10000RPMS ON A SERIAL ATA 150 CABLE (WITH NO SCSI CARD NEEDED AND THEY HAVE MAX SUSTAINED DATA RATES OF OVER 74MB PER SEC!) AND YOU HAVE A MEAN SYSTEM. YOU WONT EVEN NEED RAID!

We have both a top of the line G5 and top of the line PC here at our studio. (actually we have many more pcs) Guess what? Our PC runs quieter, faster, is more compatible with programs, has more programs, can do more, is more tweakable, scalable, useable, runs pro tools faster, and is CHEAPER!

When it comes to computers, dont go with stupidity. Microsoft may be a bitch, but i'd rather deal with evil that stupidity any day when it comes to computers-just look at the internet!

Oh and if you dont like Microsoft, then dont use the internet cause they designed the damn thing so that it can be easily used by you forum junkies.

One final Mac bash:

Dont use hardware from a company who constantly goes bankrupt.
Yes, tht's right MAC hs a long history of hidden bankruptcy.

As does REAL PLAYER.
