Even if its running x86?smoothny wrote: Wed Aug 18, 2021 1:45 pmBitwig can run x86 and arm plugins side by side due to its plugin sandboxing!dakkra wrote: Tue Aug 17, 2021 6:40 amYes, to use M1 architecture you must use M1 binary portion of both host and plugin. I don't know of any host that can bridge multi-architecture (x86 <-> ARM) right now.GruvSyco wrote: Tue Aug 17, 2021 1:55 am Curious... Does the host have to be running native too to see the M1 benefits?
Logic can run both in ARM mode, but not in rosetta mode

Have there been any meaningful comparisons in performance between the absolute base model M1 (for example, the cheapest Macbook Air) and a pimped out MBP?
The processors are fairly comparable, but the extra RAM should increase performance a little bit too, although I can't imagine by much.
I really only need an M1 Macbook in the interim until the more powerful Macbook Pro's come out next year, and I'm assuming the base model Macbook Air will do me for now. It's just for sound design away from the studio, so several instances of Zebra, Repro and/or Diva at the same time.

The rumor mill says the more powerful Macbook Pros are finally in full production as we speak and will likely be available come November.tehlord wrote: Sat Aug 21, 2021 3:30 pm I really only need an M1 Macbook in the interim until the more powerful Macbook Pro's come out next year, and I'm assuming the base model Macbook Air will do me for now. I did consider it, but I'm assuming they'll be hard to get hold of for at least the first month or two in the UK, and I was really holding out to see what M2 is going to be like, which is why I'm kind of thinking that I can wait until next year.Funkybot's Evil Twin wrote: Sat Aug 21, 2021 3:47 pm

To be honest the resale on a new Macbook Air would be so good that if it cost me £100-200 depreciation to have it now and usable for a few months, it's still worth it. If the M1X turns out to be THAT much better for not a lot more money AND I find the M1 to be running out of steam, I would likely upgrade again anyway.
At the moment it's hampering the progress of a new project that's costing me/us more than the difference in price between M1 and M1X. If that makes sense.

The graph i shown was i7 6-core Mini with 32GB of RAM vs M1 16GB.tehlord wrote: Sat Aug 21, 2021 3:30 pm Have there been any meaningful comparisons in performance between the absolute base model M1 (for example, the cheapest Macbook Air) and a pimped out MBP?

Things that eat CPU usually don't eat as much RAM (such as sofy synths)
The drives in the M1 are super fast so paging is really quick.
Getting the cheapest MBA as an interim sounds like a good plan to me.
I bought the 512/16 model but i bought it back in january and it replaced all my machines (which wasn't initially planned, but it simply works better than all my intel machines did)

I did have the same 6 core i7 Mac Mini as my last main machine, but I wasn't massively happy with the video editing capability in Davinci Resolve (I didn't realise how much of my work would require video editing) so I switched back to desktop PC for a while. As the Macbook will ONLY be for sound design as a secondary machine, I think it makes sense to just get the base model for now.
If the rumours of an all powerful Mac Mini 'Pro' are to be believed, I may well get one of those too!

As soon as the high end Mac Mini (with Apple Silicon) is announced, I'll be getting it. I'm not in a hurry as I am still waiting for a few apps to go native...tehlord wrote: Sat Aug 21, 2021 4:51 pm If the rumours of an all powerful Mac Mini 'Pro' are to be believed, I may well get one of those too!![]()

A Ryzen 7 5800x is more powerful, no contest. But since it seems everybody is using laptop now (never understood that) the m1 might be a more logical choice since it consumes a lot less energy.masterhiggins wrote: Tue Aug 10, 2021 10:59 pm How do the benchmarks compare to a similarly-priced Ryzen system?
But if you build a proper desktop/tower PC, go Ryzen over a Mac Mini.
edit: This is for general benchmarking, not specifically for u-he/audio plugins. But if they're coded properly, Ryzen should give you better performance.

You might want to try the M1 update. They’re claiming up to three times the performance in parts of the applicationtehlord wrote: Sat Aug 21, 2021 4:51 pmOk useful information, thanks.Ploki wrote: Sat Aug 21, 2021 4:42 pmThe graph i shown was i7 6-core Mini with 32GB of RAM vs M1 16GB.tehlord wrote: Sat Aug 21, 2021 3:30 pm Have there been any meaningful comparisons in performance between the absolute base model M1 (for example, the cheapest Macbook Air) and a pimped out MBP?

I'm looking forward to the M1 Mac Mini... from various reports there is basically no fan noise.xx JPRacer xx wrote: Mon Aug 23, 2021 5:56 am But if you build a proper desktop/tower PC, go Ryzen over a Mac Mini.
