Asio4all and multiple audio programs

I've recorded 4 tracks 20 years ago, without ASIO, no problem: Win98, CoolEditPro. Using two cheap soundblasters. More would be difficult to get running because of IRQ etc conflicts. Never thought back then USB would be the way forward.

Is that new in Windows 11? I've yet to update - going to hold off at least until my next new build.

No, it's DAW-dependent. Cakewalk (Bandlab now) e.g. can use WDM/WASAPI drivers for recording.

Thank you. I'm sure we were taught ASIO was essential for the task on Windows - not on Mac, of course. Which only confirmed what I thought I knew since XP. This was a while back though. I've seen the WASAPI options in Reaper recently but not needed to use and not sure I noticed it before. Only just switched to that a few months back.

I don't know if he'll want to record more than two channels at a time. Back then I had a Soundblaster as well - just one though and only ever needed to record dual inputs at the most.

I have only recently discovered this: There is also a free, open-source alternative to Asio4All which allows you to also run it in shared mode, not just exclusive mode. I tried it on two laptops. On one, it gave me significant better performance than Asio4All, on another it was a bit below it.

It doesn't really come with an UI, but you can either configure it in a text file, install a separate GUI or use KoordASIO, which is based on it but comes with an UI: https://github.com/koord-live/KoordASIO

Hi,

the following question must sound silly.

But am I right thinking that the asio-layer (I use asio4all latest version) should provide a user a way to have multiple audioprograms use one soundcard without switching?

I cannot seem to achieve this and have to shut down and start up programs constantly. This shouldn’t have to be, right?

Wrong. Lots of ASIO drivers are multi-client, but not all.
