13700k and Ableton 11, why it works better run as Admin?

You seem to be missing the crucial step, the minimum and maximum CPU state within the advanced power settings these are not adjusted by just flicking to a different power mode. These need to be set to 100%.dentaku wrote: Sat Jul 01, 2023 1:44 am
I've tried all combinations of power settings.
I've always used min and max set to 100% on other computers but for some reason I can only use a browser without audio glitches while Live 11 is playing if I run Live as admin. As admin I can even play YouTube videos without Live glitching but as non-admin I can't set min and max to 100%.
I seem to remember that using something more like the balanced setting it's better which is strange.
This does show that the glitches aren't because the CPU is being overwhelmed.

Extendability via Max. Max can do things you can’t do with plugins.

I'm certainty not thermal throttling either. CPU usage is low and temps are fine.

I just did another experiment... this time with Live 11.2 in Win 10 on a laptop with an Intel i5-8250U and it has the same problem.rod_zero wrote: Thu Jun 29, 2023 8:12 pm I can confirm the difference between running Live as admin vs not admin, specially while changing windows. I will report to support this at it seems like a bug.
But I wonder if there are more differences to this performance bug.
Obviously I can't run the test project that uses 18 Pigments and 2 Analog Labs but with just a regular project that doesn't tax this CPU terribly it will crackle and stutter when I use a web browser while running as a normal user.
BUT this time, unlike Win 11, running as Administrator doesn't make it better.
It's strange. I rarely ever had the WiFi connected while using this laptop so I guess I never noticed this problem.
Its not like people have their Ableton Live playing in the background while using a web browser very often.

Could be an ASIO thing too, as most Windows ASIO drivers/devices dont allow multitask app use, one reason why I stopped using Windows couple years ago and moved to M1 Max mini.

I am unsure what is OP issue but you spill some high-level nonsense.Goony wrote: Sun Jul 02, 2023 2:12 pm Could be an ASIO thing too, as most Windows ASIO drivers/devices dont allow multitask app use, one reason why I stopped using Windows couple years ago and moved to M1 Max mini.
I can run Ableton, Reason, or Cubase (obviously not all at the same time), a super heavy project playing, and then I can open Chrome and open 20 tabs in it, of course I can load Photoshop at the same time and unpack something with 7zip at the same time.
It always was the case for me and still is.
In fact, days of "performance" issues for me were over with the Intel Sandy Bridge processor, which was released what... a decade ago? Now I am on Ryzen 5950 and I seriously never bother to even look at the task manager, for me everything works, I mean I literally never cared for performance issues.
edit: I just opened Ableton 11.2.3 a and opened a project which for my standard is just fine, with 3 Reaktor instruments, one Zebra, one Lush 2, one Drumazon, and plenty of Ableton devices, m4l sequencers, and audio FXs.
I also for the purpose of this thread run Virtual Machine (VMware) which is running another literal copy of Windows 10 at the same time.
Upon pressing play in Ableton I don't even reach 50% while my virtual machine running a copy of windows 10 in the background (a computer running inside of a computer) is downloading 4gb archive. I don't know if that isn't the indication of superb performance I don't know what it is.
My ASIO buffer is set to 256 samples and the session is at 44khz.
The days of "performance" issues are over and no I haven't done any so-called "DAW" tunning it is just basic Windows 10 installation.
And for your information multiclient ASIO in Windows is possible. Look it up. I said I am not running DAWs at the same time because I am not seeing the logic in that but multiclient ASIO is possible and even aggregating two interfaces (another topic) is possible with ASIO4ALL which is not as perfect as on Mac but it works.

You can talk some utter shite there fella, multi client is not great on ASIO and very dependant upon interface and drivers. And is very dependant upon system setup, Windows multiclient usage can be flaky depending on interface and ASIO drivers, and I never said its not possible, please read again old chap!! I said its not always possible, and is very dependant upon interface and their respective drivers...kmonkey wrote: Sun Jul 02, 2023 2:20 pmI am unsure what is OP issue but you spill some high-level nonsense.Goony wrote: Sun Jul 02, 2023 2:12 pm Could be an ASIO thing too, as most Windows ASIO drivers/devices dont allow multitask app use, one reason why I stopped using Windows couple years ago and moved to M1 Max mini.

I also have more than a decade using Windows, Live and RME interface and this specific issue with Live having audio cracks while changing windows is totally new, probably popped up at some time after Live 11 release. I know because I use to open Live and play some virtual instrument while I change windows for a brower to see some tutorial on youtube or read something, so it is something I used to do all the time.
I had reported the issue to Ableton, the response I got is that they are looking if it is a bug. So if you have the same problem report it so they can prioritize it.
Now, this problems dissapears while running as administration so, I wonder what changed, Live or windows? or both?

Those pesky Windows updates can play havoc sometimes. Hope you get it sorted.

This talk of multitasking got me thinking, and while it doesn't play audio I decided to try running Cinebench R23 with Live playing a regular project with 4 VST instruments and one drumrack. I know that's totally unrealistic but it's an experiment.
Somehow Live 11 can handle this on a 13700k.
It crackled a bit running as a regular user but not as bad as when a simple web browser is running.
As Admin it worked fine.
Cinebench's multicore test uses all 24 logical cores at 100% and Live 11 just kept playing.

There's no such thing as a "simple web browser" anymore. They are now all RAM-hungry, multi-threaded hydras from out of the depths! They use far more resources than your average DAW. It's all seriously out of control...dentaku wrote: Sun Jul 02, 2023 6:03 pm It crackled a bit running as a regular user but not as bad as when a simple web browser is running.
I started on Logic 5 with a PowerBook G4 550Mhz. I now have a MacBook Air M1 and it's ~165x faster! So, why is my music not proportionally better?

Try Opera! Set it up properly and you will have no issue with RAM starvation. Typing this from parents' 8 year old laptop with core duo, 4gb of RAM and have about 120 tabs "open" (well Opera does not load all the tabs unless you click on them). It comes with built in VPN as well.syntonica wrote: Sun Jul 02, 2023 7:58 pmThere's no such thing as a "simple web browser" anymore. To the OP,
What are you GPU settings? Sometimes they cause the problems.
