Might be because I still remember reasonably priced music gear. I remember a Matrix-1000 sold for 180 €, or a Waldorf microQ sold for 200 €. Good times.
Oberheim Matrix 6R - Is £900 good price?

I sold mine about 5 years ago for half of that. FWIW.sibe_uk wrote: Mon Sep 18, 2023 4:09 pm Hi,
I've been offered an Oberheim Matrix 6R for £900 in very good condition running the latest firmware. Is that a decent price? I always find it hard to judge with vintage gear!
Appreciate any advice / insights![]()

I would pass on that $400 6R today too. I never found them very pleasant personally. I would also pass on a 180€ Matrix 1000. That’s me though. If it rocks someone else’s world, good for them. I also think your comparison to the Rev2 is fairly accurate. I had the mopho x4, basically the same engine, and found it similarly disagreeable.zerocrossing wrote: Tue Sep 19, 2023 1:35 amI remember passing on a 6r that was selling for $400.chk071 wrote: Mon Sep 18, 2023 8:55 pmI think it's an insane price, like anything used on this market. The Tauntek firmware is supposed to fix that. Still, hard to recommend a DCO, knobless synth with Pro-800 out there (and Polysource hopefully not too far behind).

I remember the early days of my "synth life" when the local music store had a brand new Matrix6. I loved the sound but missed the knobs and pots.
An analogue synth expander without knobs feels totally wrong to me. For the cost of a Matrix6 and a controller I could almost get a new OB6.
On the other hand getting a Matrix6r for 900 today would probably mean you could sell it for 1200 in two years or so.

I've instead now just purchased a Matrix 1000 (with 1.2 firmware) for just over half the price of the 6R I was offered and getting the Stereoping CE-1 controller as well for £200.

I disagree, but I just found the 6r/1000 to be a bit boring sounding. I had two Tetras polychained up and it was one of the coolest sounding polys I ever had. Similar to the REV2, but more aggressive.GruvSyco wrote: Tue Sep 19, 2023 5:07 amI would pass on that $400 6R today too. I never found them very pleasant personally. Absolutely not. It does not particularly sound good and is definately not in the same league as the "proper" Oberheims. It got absolutely slated when it came out, I know, I was around at the time.
As others have said it's a pain to edit. You may find that even with an editor it crashes because it can't handle the amount of data the editor sends.
I had a Matrix 6R for a few days and then it packed up, it went to one of the best techs in the Uk and they couldn't find the issue. End of story. I then had a Matrix 1000 for a few years. Went to sell it and found that somehow 3 voices had disappeared. Still managed to sell it for more as a 3 voice than I'd paid a few years back as a 6 voice.

Great price! 1.2 firmware fixes the slow MIDI response and adds detune?sibe_uk wrote: Tue Sep 19, 2023 10:19 am I've instead now just purchased a Matrix 1000 (with 1.2 firmware) for just over half the price of the 6R I was offered and getting the Stereoping CE-1 controller as well for £200.

oops just seen this. Look out for power hum, power supply issues and voices going walkabout (although that last one is something you can fix yourself if you are reasonably handy).sibe_uk wrote: Tue Sep 19, 2023 10:19 am I've instead now just purchased a Matrix 1000 (with 1.2 firmware) for just over half the price of the 6R I was offered and getting the Stereoping CE-1 controller as well for £200.

If all works well (technically) this sounds like a good deal.sibe_uk wrote: Tue Sep 19, 2023 10:19 am I've instead now just purchased a Matrix 1000 (with 1.2 firmware) for just over half the price of the 6R I was offered and getting the Stereoping CE-1 controller as well for £200.

500 dollar matrix 1000 is solid, all things considered. i had a matrix 6 (twice!) and considered buying it for a 3rd time (why are we sick like this.) but at current prices of 1000 USD + it doesn't really make sense, now that the P800 is out there and UBXA may or may not be imminent.

UB-XA is tipped to cost around at least 1K so it's still a good deal imo. Although a desktop UB-XA d (and UB-X) is also supposed to be in the works. Also, a Matrix 1000 is a real Oberheim.
