Oberheim Matrix 6R - Is £900 good price?

Hi,

I've been offered an Oberheim Matrix 6R for £900 in very good condition running the latest firmware. Is that a decent price? I always find it hard to judge with vintage gear!

Well, the ‘08 has been around for 15 years. Next year it could get a learner’s driving permit in the USA if it was a human.

Matrix6 is a very fine synth soundwise but don't expect it to be a OB8 / OB-X. It's far away from the liveliness of the old flagships. Also it's a p.i.t.a. to programm without a dedicated controller like these by Stereoping or Access which are 2nd hand and almost the same price as the synth itself. And for me it wouldn't make much sense to edit a hardware synth with a software editor these days when there are better alternatives.
Also keep in mind that the envelopes aren't the snappiest.

A second hand poly synth by DSI or a Novation Peak would be my humble suggestion. Or even a new Behringer Pro-800. Of course, what all these synths have in common is that they don't sound like a Matrix6.

They use essentially the same synth chip, the Curtis CEM3396 which integrates the DCO's, VCF and VCA on a single chip. So in terms of sound they're quite similar. The Prophet however has more features and hands-on control and a much faster processor (snappier envelopes, faster LFO's etc.).

The Behringer Pro-800 would sound more vintage than either however, due to using VCO's and a different filter.

Novation Peak - I’ve not really given that much consideration, might take another look

I'd think a prophet synth and an oberheim synth would be a perfect combo, personally. So go for it. Also btw wrong forum! Should be in the hardware section.

I think it's an insane price, like anything used on this market. But... they seem to sell, so, I guess the price is just right. I would never pay such price for such gear.

Might be because I still remember reasonably priced music gear. I remember a Matrix-1000 sold for 180 €, or a Waldorf microQ sold for 200 €. Good times.

Earlier this year, someone had an Obie 6R for sale locally for $1000 USD. It was posted for at least a month before it disappeared, so I have no idea if the seller found a buyer, took a lower offer, or just decided to keep it, but there's one reference point for you (it certainly did not sell for more than $1K).

That said, I agree with the recommendations to buy a P'08 instead. It's a lot more synth for the money and buying vintage is just asking for headaches.

Don’t get me started. I used to have TR808, TR909, SH101, Juno 60, Juno 106, TB303 (I was Roland whore back in the day lol) all sold before buying vintage gear became a thing!!
