If You Were Going to Downsize Your Music Software/Plugins, What Would You Keep?

OK, I see now... Sounds like alotta crashy... Thus I quickly deduce to downsize to stability first & low CPU-RAM resources with everything in it working swimmingly so Reason 3.0.4 my main choice... Probably Massiva (right before becoming EnergyXT) & Making Waves (Current Version) as alternates...mjolnir wrote: Thu Dec 26, 2024 5:19 am @eLawnMust: I used to only use the step editor and samples in FL Studio, but I'm gonna go all the way into FL Studio I think.
I know certain plugins work, but others I know crash/freeze the DAW. So yeah, it ain't pretty. I put forth the effort to reload some of the best 32-bit plugins I could think of months ago, so I'd have compatibility with EnergyXT. But I recently discovered how to make the MIDI in FL Studio more like the MIDI in EnergyXT (which is good). I'm not very good at explaining this, but basically, different DAWs have different advantages, and some of them get crashed by specific VSTs, others don't. FL Studio crashes on some 32-bit VSTs' EnergyXT crashes on any 64-bit VSTs' and Linux REAPER can load all of them, but it's MIDI is much more annoying to me than the others.
Anyways, to answer the question.
I already think I'm gonna keep any CLAP plugins since they don't seem to crash.

does it work that way?Scotty wrote: Wed Dec 25, 2024 10:32 pm At some point you would be doing us a favour by putting that up on archive.org. That is one massive archive.
harryupbabble wrote: Wed Dec 25, 2024 3:49 pm my collection contains more than 10 thousand vst plugins
all freeware, as far as i know
i have saved them on dvds
twice, in case of dvd failure
a lot of them, i find...
cannot be found anymore
i learned the lesson of keeping things...
from my days of collecting cds
i would get rid of bands like bauhaus only to want it again later
i got rid of my eagles greatest hits a decade or so ago
and now i get the urge to get that cd
the difference is that it's easier to get that eagles cd...
compared to vst plugins i mean
yup, some are extremely hard to find now
for example, i cannot find the vst plugins by the developer named...
direct approach
my understanding of archive.org
is that it takes snapshots of websites
i don't have a website
it cost tons of money and time to have/keep one?
i don't have that kind of money
and i barely have enough time for speed scrabble
and even less time to dabble in trying to make songs
and even if i do have a website...
i can't just "distribute" other people's properties?
vst plugins are properties of developers?
even if they are free?

Wayback Machine is under the umbrella of Internet Archive. Here is a basic guide on uploading to the latter:harryupbabble wrote: Thu Dec 26, 2024 3:14 pm my understanding of archive.org

I suggest reading to inform yourself instead of asking me questions that I have no time to answer.

Probably keep ableton with stock plugins. And probably some max4live devices, like a GMclipper, since Ableton doesn't have it. And a nice arpeggiator tool like Stepic.
And for mastering probably fabilter and ozone are really nice to use for referencing.

I have a Mac and Logic Pro, so I'd certainly keep LPX. Regarding plugins, I'd only keep the ones that are easy on the CPU, no iLok, Waves or download managers. That would leave me with Valhalla, Sonimus, and TDR.

I understand your concerns. When I stated "at some point" ... I was implying whenever you felt comfortable. Clearly you are not and that is fine. There are others that are making this possible.

Considering I had a long period where I made a fair amount with just the synths that came with Cakewalk and RM IV/RMV I could go with just that.
And of course Delay Lama.
But then I did do a few cool things with Crystal, and Absynth and Kontakt.

I don’t really get the urge to purge that often, though sometimes when I get a new computer, I’ll skip installing a few things that I haven’t used in years. I don’t have that many plugins in rotation, but it’s nice to be able to load up something that’s gathering dust and take it for a spin.

I don't have much if anything to purge, I don't acquire much that i don't use at least semi frequently.
I've mentioned it here a few times- when i'm feeling experimental i will feed a list of all my plug ins into random.com and use a few of the top listers.
*and so many other members with thousands of posts i found useful/interesting. KVR went through a really dark period when these commenters were banned.

I could do just fine with Digital Performer, Falcon, OBXtreme 3, Plasmonic, Hive, Synestia, Tonex, and Atlas. Limitless to master and I'm good.
Same is true with Orchestral libraries, Musio or EWHO Opus would be enough.
I like having all the choices 500 plugins gives you, but realistically it's just because I can.
